The 22nd ranked San Diego State Aztecs improved to 3-0 on the season after defeating the 19th ranked Sanford Cardinals, 20-17, this past Saturday. In a tight back and forth game, San Diego was able to pull off the upset victory after an 8-yard TD pass from Christian Chapman to David Wells put the Aztecs up by a 20-17 margin with just :54 left in regulation. San Diego State outgained Stanford by a 353-254 margin and won the turnover battle by a 3-0 margin. Leading the way for the Aztecs was RB Rashaad Penny who had a TD and 175 rushing yards on the ground while also reeling in 5 catches for 21 yards through the air. On the season, San Diego State is averaging 29.3 ppg on 406.0 total yards per game (165.7 passing, 240.3 rushing). Offensively, San Diego State has been led by RB Rashaad Penny who had 4 TD’s on the season and is averaging 196.0 rushing yds/g on 23.7 att/g. QB Christian Chapman has completed 67.6% of his passes on the season for 4 TD and an INT while averaging 160.0 passing yds/g on 22.7 att/g. The main receiving threats for the Chapman and the Aztecs have been WR Mikah Holder (3.7 rec/g, 37.0 yds/g), WR Kahale Warring (2.7 rec/g, 31.0 yds/g, TD), and RB Rashaad Penny (3.0 rec/g, 23.0 yds/g, TD). San Diego State has forced 7 turnovers on the season and have an overall turnover margin of +5.
The Air Force Falcons fell to a 1-1 on the season after being defeated by the 7th ranked Michigan Wolverines, 29-13, this past Saturday. Air Force and their defensive kept the game competitive as Falcons trailed by just a 16-13 margin late in the 3rd quarter, however, the offensive just couldn’t put up enough points against the Wolverines defense to get the victory. Air Force was outgained by Michigan by a 359-232 margin and only threw for 64 passing yards in the loss. Leading the way for the Falcons was QB Arion Worthman who threw for a 64-yard TD while added 60 rushing yards on 26 carries. On the season, Air Force is averaging 37.5 ppg on 447.5 total yards per game (127.0 passing yds/g, 320.5 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Air Force is led by their triple-option rushing attack which currently ranks 7th in the country in rushing offense. Leading the rushing attack has been RB Tim McVey (10.5 att/g, 80.0 yds/g, TD), QB Arion Worthman (18.5 att/g, 46.5 yds/g, TD), RB Parker Wilson (5.5 att/g, 34.5 yds/g), and WR Ronald Cleveland (2.5 att/g, 24.5 yds/g, TD). QB Arion Worthman has completed 9 of 19 attempts on the season for 3 TD and 0 INT while averaging 118.0 passing yds/g. RB Tim McVey (1.5 rec/g, 38.5 yds/g), Ronald Cleveland (.5 rec/g, 32.0 yds/g, TD), and Geraud Sanders (1.0 rec/g, 31.0 yds/g, 2 TD) are the leading receivers for the Falcons. Defensively, Air Force is holding their opponents to an average of 14.5 ppg on 227.0 total yards per game (104.5 passing yds/g, 122.5 rushing yds/g). Air Force has only committed 1 turnover on the season and currently has an overall turnover margin of +1.
The Aztecs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win and 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 conference games. The Falcons are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 16-7 ATS in their last 23 home games.
San Diego State picked up nice back to back wins against Pac-12 teams and entered the top-25 led by their outstanding running back, Rashaad Penny, who currently leads all College Football in rushing. Air Force played Michigan tough and is once again is led by their triple-option offense. Air Force has looked good early in the season but this is team that lost a lot of experience from last year’s 10-3 squad and as I think the Aztecs rushing defense will be able to give the Falcons some trouble, I’m taking Rashaad Penny and San Diego State to do enough to cover this small road spread.
