USA TODAY Sports

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs dropped to 2-2 (0-0 C-USA) on the season after losing to the South Carolina Gamecocks 17-16, this past Saturday. Louisiana Tech to a 13-0 lead with 8:54 left in the 3rd quarter, but the defense couldn't hold off the South Carolina offense who hit the game winning field goal with :04 seconds left in the game. The Jaguars were outgained by the Gamecocks by a 438-361 margin however, won the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Leading the way for Louisiana Tech was QB J'Mar Smith who completed 23-33 passes for 281 yards and a TD and INT. On the season, the Bulldogs are averaging 28.0 ppg on 400.3 total yards per game (256.5 passing yds/g; 143.8 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Louisiana Tech is led by J'Mar Smith who is completing 56.2% of his passes on the season for 4 TD and 3 INT while averaging 250.8 passing  yds/g. Smith has a pair of talented WR's in Rhashid Bonnette (2.8 rec/g, 69.8 yds/g, 2 TD) and Teddy Veal (6.3 rec/g, 60.8 yds/g, TD). The backfield is led by Jarred Craft (15.5 att/g, 74.0 yds/g, 2 TD) and Boston Scott (9.5 att/g, 49.3 yds/g). Defensively, Louisiana Tech is allowing their opponents to an average of 30.0 ppg on 413.3 total yards per game (227.3 passing yds/g; 186.0 rushing yds/g). The Bulldogs have forced 6 turnovers so far in the season and have an overall turnover margin of –2.

The Jaguars are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games in September and just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games. The Bulldogs are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games vs. Sun-Belt opponents however, just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.

South Alabama has had a tough schedule to start the season with games at Ole Miss and Oklahoma State, and although they must be disappointed after letting a win slip through their fingers against Idaho, has to be encouraged by the defensive performance they put up against a good Idaho offense. Louisiana Tech has looked good in the past two weeks in both their games against Western Kentucky and South Carolina and will continue to look to find their offense after losing so much talent on that end after last season. Louisiana Tech is a tough place to play, however, I really liked what I saw out of the Jaguars defense last week and as I think South Alabama will be able to put up some points against a weak Bulldogs defense, I’m taking South Alabama and the points in this one.
