The East Carolina Pirates would love a nice conference victory to climb out of a rough 1-4 hole. The East Carolina Pirates have lost five straight home games. Thomas Sirk is completing 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,129 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions. Sirk and Gardner Minshew have combined for nine touchdown passes this season. Davon Grayson and Trevon Brown have combined for 860 receiving yards and seven touchdowns while Quay Johnson has 18 receptions. The East Carolina Pirates ground game is averaging 106 yards per contest, and Sirk leads the way with 159 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, East Carolina is allowing 50.6 points and 614.8 yards per game. Jordan Williams leads the East Carolina Pirates with 49 tackles, Kiante Anderson has 3.5 sacks and Bobby Fulp has one interception.
The Owls are 26-9 ATS in their last 35 conference games, 5-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Pirates are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games, 5-21 ATS in their last 26 conference games and 10-28 ATS in their last 38 games overall. The Owls are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings.
East Carolina is easily the worst defensive team in the country, as the Pirates are allowing at least 40 yards more than any other team and is one of two teams (Louisiana-Lafayette) allowing 50-plus points per game. There's little reason to consider backing ECU for any reason, as the defense is sure to drive you crazy. However, Temple doesn't exactly have the offense to expose those issues, as the Owls have scored 16 or less points in four of their five games and their -4 turnover difference is one of the worst in college football. East Carolina has shown the last two weeks that it can score points, and if that's the case here against a Temple defense that isn't up to par, this is a contest the Pirates could win outright. I'll take my free field goal.
