The #5 Georgia Bulldogs and the Vanderbilt Commodores square off in SEC college football action from Nashville in week 6 on Saturday.
The #5 Georgia Bulldogs will look to crack the top 4 with some help after jumping into the top-5 thanks to a 41-0 win over Tennessee to improve to 5-0 this season and 2-0 in SEC play. Jake Fromm threw for 84 yards on 7 of 15 passing with a touchdown and an interception, while also racking up a pair of rushing TDs with his 7 carries for 20 yards. Nick Chubb led Georgia’s ground attack with 109 yards on 16 carries, while Sony Michel added 64 yards and a touchdown with his 11 carries. Brian Herrien added a rushing TD of his own, while Terry Godwin led Georgia with 2 receptions for 43 yards and Javon Wims added a team-high 3 receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, UGA combined for 3 sacks, a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery, while stifling the Tennessee offense, holding the Vols to just 142 yards of total offense and a 1 for 12 mark on 3rd down in the win.
The Vanderbilt Commodores will look to bounce back from back-to-back conference losses, including a 38-24 loss to Florida in their last outing, dropping the Commodores to 3-2 this season, including 0-2 in SEC play. Kyle Shurmur completed just 18 of his 40 pass attempts, but threw for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns in the loss. Ralph Webb led yet another abysmal performance from Vandy’s ground attack, putting up just 29 yards on 11 carries. C.J. Duncan led the ‘Dores with 5 catches for 75 yards, while Kalija Lipscomb, Caleb Scott and Nathan Marcus each contributed a receiving TD in the loss. On defense, a Jonathan Wynn sack was the lone highlight as Vanderbilt allowed 467 yards of total offense to the Gators in the losing effort.
Georgia is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 conference games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games while the under is 21-7 in their last 28 games overall. Vanderbilt is 1-10 ATS in their last 11 home games against a team with a winning road record and 22-7 ATS in their last 29 games following a game where they failed to cover the spread while the under is 55-27-1 in their last 83 conference games. The underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
This is a lot of points to lay on the road in a matchup where the underdog has had the bulk of the success. However, Vanderbilt is struggling mightily right now, and facing a Georgia team that is hungry to crack the playoff spots surely won’t help matters. Georgia is firing on all cylinders right now, and they are a much better team than Florida, who had a soldi day offensively against this Commodores defense. The Bulldogs have done well against the number on the road and in conference, so I’ll lay the points with Georgia until Vanderbilt shows me that they can hang with the higher-end competition in the SEC.
