We have some inter-conference action on the gridiron, as the BYU Cougars take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a college football matchup.
The BYU Cougars desperately need a win to stay in bowl contention and to snap a five game losing skid after a 24-7 loss to Boise State in their last outing. Tanner Mangum threw for 164 yards and a pair of interceptions on 18 of 33 passing, while Ula Tolutau led the BYU ground game with 9 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown. Matt Bushman led the Cougars’ receiving corps with 7 catches for 65 yards, while Trey Dye added 35 yards and Jonah Trinnaman along with Neil Pau’u each caught 3 receptions in the losing effort. Defensively, a Grant Jones interception was the lone highlight in an otherwise decent outing for the Cougars, as they gave up just 300 yards of total offense, but allowed Boise State to go 8 for 15 on 3rd down.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs have had an extra week to lick their wounds after a 49-10 loss to Auburn bounced the Bulldogs from the top-25, falling to 3-2 this season and 0-2 in SEC play. . Nick Fitzgerald completed just 13 of his 33 pass attempts for 157 yards, a touchdown and two picks, while also leading the team in rushing with 56 rushing yards on 13 carries. Aeris Williams added 49 rushing yards on a team-high 15 carries, while Jamal Couch hauled in a pair of receptions for a team-high 60 yards. Keith Mixon chipped in 45 receiving yards, while Justin Johnson caught 3 passes, including the team’s lone touchdown in the loss. Defensively, the Bulldogs combined for a pair of sacks and a pair of forced fumbles, but gave up 511 yards of total offense to Auburn in the loss, despite dominating the time of possession battle, holding the rock for over 34 minutes.
BYU is 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games against the SEC while the under is 11-3 in their last 14 games overall. Mississippi State is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing 200+ rushing yards in their previous game while the under is 9-4 in his last 13 home games.
I came into this season thinking that BYU could find themselves in a big bowl game come December or January, and boy how that has changed. The Cougars have fallen and they can’t get up, and while Mississippi State has come out of the gate slow in the SEC, this is a chance to get their minds right against a BYU team that hasn’t covered the spread once this season, and hasn’t had any success in the last few years against the spread when playing the SEC. I’ll side with Mississippi State here as more of a fade from BYU.
