The South Carolina Gamecocks and the Tennessee Volunteers square off in SEC action on Saturday in a college football matchup.
The South Carolina Gamecocks will look for another statement win in conference after notching their first SEC victory of the season, a 48-22 victory over Arkansas in their last outing to improve to 4-2 this season and 1-1 in SEC play. Jake Bentley threw for 199 yards and 3 touchdowns on 16 of 31 passing, while Rico Dowdle led South Carolina with 61 rushing yards on 11 carries. Hayden Hurst led USC’s receiving corps, by hauling in a pair of balls for 76 yards and a touchdown, while Bryan Edwards added a TD grab of his own and OrTre Smith caught a team-high 3 passes in the win. The Gamecocks’ defense made up almost half of the scoring in the win, with Skai Moore and Keisean Nixon each contributing a pick-six, while T.J. Brunson had a pair of fumble recoveries, including a 73- yard recovery that was returned for a touchdown. All of this while holding Arkansas to just 224 yards of total offense in the win.
USA TODAY Sports
The Tennessee Volunteers had a week off to lick their wounds after being pasted by then #7 Georgia by a final score of 41-0 to fall to 3-2 this season and 0-2 in SEC play. Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano combined to go 11 of 23 for 80 yards and two interceptions, while John Kelly racked up 44 rushing yards on 16 carries to lead the team in that department. Kelly was a dual-threat however, also leading the Vols in receiving with 4 catches for 47 yards. Defensively, Tennessee combined for a pair of sacks and an interception, but those were the lone highlights as UGA racked up 378 yards of total offense, including a whopping 294 rushing yards when all was said and done.
South Carolina is 4-1-2 ATS in their last 7 conference games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games in October while the under is 13-3 in their last 16 games following a win. Tennessee is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 conference games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. The underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
With lines like this, it’s no wonder the underdog has had so much success in this matchup. I know the Vols had an extra week to rest and prepare, and that their last loss came to Georgia who is a legit National Playoff contender. However, a week off, win or lose, more often than not leaves some rust heading into the next outing, while South Carolina has to be feeling good after beating the brakes off of Arkansas last week. I’ll take the points with South Carolina in a game that I think the Gamecocks take outright.
