We have Mountain West conference action on the gridiron as the San Diego State Aztecs take on the Hawaii Warriors from Honolulu.
The San Diego State Aztecs will look to snap out of a funk that’s seen the team drop back-to-back games, falling to 6-2 this season and 2-2 in conference play after a 27-3 loss to Fresno State in their last outing. Christian Chapman and Ryan Agnew combined to go 11 for 23 for 90 yards through the air, while Rashaad Penny led the Aztecs with 69 rushing yards on 15 carries. Juwan Washington wasn’t far behind with 68 rushing yards on 7 carries, while Mikah Holder led the squad with 4 receptions for 35 yards. There wasn’t much else for the Aztecs to write home about, as the team was outgained 375-255 in terms of total offense in the loss.
The Hawaii Warriors will look to build some steam after notching their first conference win of the season, a 37-26 decision over San Jose State last time out. Dru Brown threw for 173 yards and a touchdown on 12 of 23 passing, while Cole McDonald threw for a score as well. Diocemy Saint Juste was the workhorse for the Warriors’ backfield, carrying the rock 39 times, turning that into 202 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Ryan Tuiasoa added a rushing score of his own, while Keelan Ewaliko led Hawaii with 3 catches for 82 yards. Dylan collie also added 3 receptions with a touchdown, while Dakota Torres chipped in a receiving touchdown of his own in the win for the Warriors. Defensively, Hawaii combined for 4 sacks and an interception, but gave up over 500 yards of total offense to an otherwise offensively challenged San Jose State squad.
San Diego State is 11-4 ATS in their last 15 road games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 conference games while the under is 7-2-1 in their last 10 games overall. Hawaii is 8-22-1 ATS in their last 31 games overall and 0-6 ATS in their last 6 home games against a team with a winning road record while the over is 9-4 in their last 13 home games. San Diego State is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Hawaii.
There’s no denying that San Diego State has struggled lately, but Boise State and Fresno State are two of the top teams in the conference. It’s all well and good that Hawaii got one in the win column, but I can’t trust the Warriors after seeing how San Jose State was able to move the ball offensively. I’m a little weary of laying points with San Diego State on the road here, especially with the travel to Hawaii, but I think the Aztecs are the only choice here.
