A pair of 5-2 teams square off in SEC action as the Mississippi State Bulldogs visit the Texas A&M Aggies in a week 9 college football matchup.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs will look to keep the ball rolling after back-to-back wins, including a 45-7 win over Kentucky in their last outing to improve to 2-2 in SEC play and 5-2 overall. Nick Fitzgerald threw for 155 yards and a touchdown on 18 of 26 passing, while also leading the Bulldogs with 115 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on 12 carries. Aeris Williams racked up 71 rushing yards with his team-high 20 carries while Keytaon Thompson put up 65 rushing yards and a pair of rushing scores of his own. Donald Gray led Mississippi State with 6 receptions for 51 yards, while Gabe Myles caught 4 passes for 30 yards and Jordan Thomas added the team’s lone touchdown grab through the air. Defensively, Mississippi State combined for 3 sacks and a pair of interceptions, including a pick-six that Gerri Green returned 84 yards, early in the 4th quarter, all while holding Kentucky to just 260 yards of total offense and just 25 minutes of possession in the win.
The Texas A&M Aggies will try to keep rolling after their bye week, winning 5 of their last 6 games including a 19-17 road win over Florida last time out to climb to 3-1 in the SEC and 5-2 overall. Kellen Mond threw for 180 yards and a pick on just 8 of 24 passing, while also leading the Aggies with 52 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Damion Ratley led A&M with a pair of catches for 72 yards, while Christian Kirk added 44 receiving yards of his own. Defensively, the Aggies combined for 5 sacks and a pair of interceptions, giving up 371 yards of total offense and over 33 minutes of possession to the Gators in the win.
Mississippi State is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a win of 20 of more points while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 road games. Texas A&M is 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 conference games and 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 home games.
There’s not much to separate these two on the surface. However, Texas A&M has recovered well from that opening week collapse against UCLA, and their only conference loss this season was to Alabama and that was only by 8 points, which is pretty remarkable considering what Bama has done to the rest of their conference opposition this season. Mississippi State’s conference wins over LSU and Kentucky were also impressive, but between these two teams, the home team has won the last 4 meetings by at least a touchdown, so considering how the line is a pick 'em, I’ll go with the Aggies on home soil.
