We have some Sun Belt conference action on tap as the Georgia Southern Eagles square off against the Troy Trojans in a week 9 college football matchup.
The Georgia Southern Eagles will be on the hunt for their first win of the season still after falling to 0-6 thanks to a 55-20 rout at the hands of UMASS in their last outing. Kado Brown went 4 for 9 for 148 yards and an interception, while also rushing for 53 yards and 2 rushing TDs on 21 carries. Wesley Field racked up a team-high 62 rushing yards on 12 carries, while Mark Michaud was the only Eagle to have more than 1 reception in the loss, catching a pair of balls for 88 yards, while Malik Henry’s lone grab went for 55 yards. The Eagles also disappointed on defense, giving up season highs of 55 points and 670 yards of total offense against, allowing 35 or more points for the 5th time in their 6games this season.
The Troy Trojans will look to build some momentum after bouncing back with a 34-10 win over Georgia State to climb to 5-2 this season and 2-1 in Sun Belt play, in a 3-way tie for 3rd in the conference. Brandon Silvers completed 25 of 35 pass attempts for 335 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception. Josh Anderson led the Trojans with 13 carries for 57 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Deondre Douglas’ lone rush went 35 yards for a score of his own. Douglas also added a receiving TD, as did John Johnson, while Tray Eafford led the team with 67 receiving yards and Jamarius Henderson caught a team-high 5 passes for 62 yards in the W. The Trojans D combined for 4 sacks and an interception, all while holding the Panthers to just 307 yards of total offense and a 7 for 19 mark on 3rd down.
Georgia Southern is 1-8 ATS in their last 9 conference games and 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 road games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. Troy is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games overall while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record.
I see no reason to back Georgia Southern here, as they have Christmas tree written all over them, getting lit up time and time again. The Eagles can score, but their opponent tends to score in bunches and the Eagles simply can’t keep up with that. I can excuse losses to teams like Auburn and even Indiana but this is a team that lost to New Hampshire as well. Troy isn’t killing the spread either, but they’re at least covering the odd game here and there and are putting up W’s, so I’ll back the Trojans here as more of a fade from Georgia Southern.
