We have some inter-conference action on the gridiron as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles face off against the Tennessee Volunteers in a college football matchup on Saturday evening.
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will look for a big win after having their 3-game winning streak snapped following a 30-12 loss to UAB in their last outing. Keon Howard and Kwadra Griggs combined for 266 passing yards on 19 of 38 passing, while Ito Smith led USM in rushing and receiving with 12 carries for 36 yards and 3 catches for 93 yards and the team’s lone touchdown in the game. Korey Robertson caught 6 passes for 65 yards, while Allenzae Staggers caught 7 passes for 61 yards in the loss. Defensively, the Golden Eagles combined for 3 sacks while allowing UAB to put up 417 yards of total offense and almost 34 minutes of possession by the end of the game.
The Tennessee Volunteers will be looking for a confidence win to snap a 4-game losing streak after falling to Kentucky in their last outing by a final score of 29-26. Jarrett Guarantano racked up 242 yards on 18 of 23 passing, while Ty Chandler led the Vols’ ground attack with 22 carries for 120 yards and a pair of TDs. Carlin Fils-Aime put up 73 rushing yards with his 13 carries, while Jeff George led Tennessee with 59 receiving yards and Brandon Johnson and Ethan Wolf each caught a team-high 3 passes in the loss. Defensively, the Vols recovered a whopping 4 fumbles, but it wasn’t enough as Tennessee just couldn’t get the stops that they needed down the stretch as Kentucky put up 371 yards of total offense and just over 21 minutes of possession in the Wildcats’ win.
Southern Miss is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against the SEC and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall while the under is 4-0-1 in their last 5 non-conference games. Tennessee is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games on grass.
Tennessee’s offense has improved, however I need to see that on a more consistent basis before I back the Vols against anybody. Southern Miss has played their SEC opposition touch and have covered quite well on the road as of late while Tennessee has yet to cover in a home game this season. I think this one has upset potential, so I’ll take a stab at Southern Miss and the points.
