We have some SEC action on tap Saturday afternoon, as the Mississippi State Bulldogs take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in a college football matchup.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs will try to bounce back after having their 4 game winning streak snapped thanks to a heartbreaking 31-24 loss to Alabama in their last outing. Nick Fitzgerald threw for 158 yards on 13 of 24 passing, while also rushing for a touchdown with 21 carries for 66 yards. Aeris Williams led Mississippi State with 97 rushing yards and 2 TDs while Deddrick Thomas led the MSU receiving corps with 30 receiving yards. Reggie Todd and Farrod Green also added a pair of receptions in the losing effort for the Bulldogs. Defensively, the Bulldogs combined for 5 sacks while giving up 444 yards of total offense to Alabama with the Tide holding the ball for just over 21 minutes of the game.
The Arkansas Razorbacks will try to bounce back after having their mini 2 game winning streak snapped with a 33-10 loss to LSU last time out. Austin Allen and Cole Kelley combined to throw for 176 yards and an interception on 16 of 33 passing, while David Williams led the team with 81 rushing yards and Devwah Whaley contributed 55 yards and the team’s lone touchdown in the loss. Will Gragg led the Hogs with 47 receiving yards, while Jeremy Patton hauled in a team-high 4 catches for 44 yards in the losing effort. Defensively, Arkansas combined for a pair of sacks and a forced fumble, but still gave up 425 yards of total offense to LSU in the losing effort.
Mississippi State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 conference games while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record. Arkansas is 0-6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games and 2-9-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a loss. The road team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
I’m concerned that this could be a letdown spot for Mississippi State after dropping a game that they thought they had against Bama, however, a spot in the SEC championship seems out of reach for Mississippi State now, so their focus will mainly be on improving their potential bowl game. Arkansas hasn’t looked good in their last couple of outings and I expect that to continue here against Mississippi State so I’ll back the Bulldogs here.
