The Line: Old Dominion Monarchs -9 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
We have some Conference USA action on the gridiron as the Rice Owls take on the Old Dominion Monarchs in a college football matchup.
The Rice Owls will be looking for a confidence win that would snap an 8 game losing streak following a 43-34 loss to Southern Miss in their last outing to send the Owls to 1-9 this season. Miklo Smalls threw for 127 yards on 10 of 15 passing, while also rushing for 42 yards. Nahshon Ellerbe led the Owls with 153 rushing yards on 22 carries with 4 touchdowns, while Austin Walter added a rushing score of his own in the losing effort. Aaron Cephus led Rice with 4 catches for 68 yards, while Parker Smith logged 36 yards with his lone catch and the aforementioned Walter added 4 catches of his own in the loss. Defensively, Rice had no answer for Southern Miss, giving up 517 yards of total offense in the loss.

The Old Dominion Monarchs will look to build on back-to-back wins following a 37-30 victory over FIU in their last outing. Steven Williams threw for 240 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 17 of 24 passing, while Ray Lawry rushed for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 19 carries. Isaiah Harper led the Monarchs with 108 receiving yards on 3 catches, while Melvin Vaughn and Travis Fulgham each led the team with 4 catches with both adding 47 yards, the only difference being a touchdown for Vaughn. On defense, Old Dominion combined for a pair of sacks to match a pair of forced fumbles, both of which the Monarchs recovered, but still gave up 487 yards of offense to the Panthers in the win.
Rice is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 33-16-2 ATS in their last 51 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 4-1-1 in their last 6 games following a loss. Old Dominion is 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 home games and 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 conference games while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games following a win.
There’s not much to separate these two teams aside from their records, meaning this is one that is probably best left alone, however, for the sake of the pick, the lone meeting all-time between the two schools produced a tight 3 point game in 2014, and with the Owls having nothing to lose, I think we can expect another close game so I’ll side with Rice and the points.
