A pair of SEC teams look for their first conference win of the year when the Vanderbilt Commodores face off against the Tennessee Volunteers in a college football matchup on Saturday afternoon.
The Vanderbilt Commodores will try to bounce back from back-to-back defeats following their 45-17 loss to Missouri in their last outing. Kyle Shurmur threw for 348 yards, a touchdown and 3 interceptions on 28 of 52 passing. Ralph Webb led the ‘Dores with 55 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Jared Pinkney led the team with 6 catches for 119 yards. Kalija Lipscomb added 4 catches for 68 yards, while C.J. Duncan added 5 catches and Caleb Scott added a touchdown grab in the losing effort. Vandy’s defense was relatively decent, despite giving up 45 points, they allowed 426 yards of total offense to the Tigers in the loss.
The Tennessee Volunteers will also try to bounce back from a pair of consecutive defeats following their 30-10 loss to LSU last time out. Jarrett Guarantano threw for 239 yards and a touchdown on 13 of 23 passing, while John Kelly rushed for 47 yards on 25 carries. Marquez Callaway led the team with 72 yards and a touchdown with a pair of receptions, while Jeff George’s lone reception went for 60 yards. Kelly and Brandon Johnson both shared the team lead with 3 receptions apiece. Defensively, Elliott Barry’s sack was the lone individual highlight as the Vols held LSU to 281 yards of total offense and 4 for 12 on 3rd down, but just couldn’t get the stops needed to keep LSU off of the board, leading to the loss.
Vanderbilt is 0-6-1 ATS in their last 7 conference games and 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 road games while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 games overall. Tennessee is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 conference games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 home games. Vanderbilt is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
Let me get this straight, we have a game between two teams who are a combined 0-14 in conference play this season, with essentially a pick ‘em? If anyone were to try to bet this game, don’t worry, let me know and we will try to get you some help. This is a dumpster fire of a game and won’t be pretty. With that said, Tennessee has had their own troubles moving the ball this season, while Shurmur and the Commodores have shown flashed of ability to move the ball through the air. I’m staying far away from this game, but if forced to pick, I’d go with Vanderbilt here.
