The Nicholls State Colonels and Kansas Jayhawks meet Saturday in college football action at Memorial Stadium.
The Nicholls State Colonels are coming off an eight win year and are expected to be one of the top teams in the Southland this season. Nicholls State averaged 28 points last season and will once again be an explosive unit with nearly all the key players returning. Chase Fourcade is still at quarterback after throwing for 14 touchdowns. Kyran Irvin and Dontrell Taylor return as the top two rushers, and Damion Jeanpiere & Dai'Jean Dixon are back after combining for nine receiving touchdowns. This will be a fun scoring offense this season. Nicholls State also returns its top seven tacklers from last season, which includes Kenny Dotson who had 6.5 sacks and Corey Abraham who led the team with 79 tackles. Last year, Nicholls State allowed 25 points and 352 yards per game. The Nicholls State Colonels will be in the thick of things for a conference title this season.

The Kansas Jayhawks are averaging one win per season in the last three years, so there’s truly only one way to go for this program. Kansas returns a ton of production from last season and maybe that’s going to be the formula to finally putting together somewhat of a decent season. Let’s not forget that Kansas hasn’t won more than three games since 2009 and hasn’t sniffed a bowl appearance since 2008. While Kansas doesn’t have a proven quarterback, Khalil Herbert showed flashes of being a solid running back and Steven Sims may be the most underrated wide receiver in the country. There are some playmakers on this KU offense, but it needs to find a reliable signal caller to make things work. Defensively, defensive lineman Daniel Wise is back after being an All Big 12 selection last season and linebacker Joe Dineen finished third in the country last year with 11.42 tackles per game. The Kansas Jayhawks have better than expected talent on this team, it’s just a matter of actually getting results for a change.
The Colonels are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games, 5-0 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Jayhawks are 5-17-1 ATS in their last 23 games in September and 5-16-1 ATS in their last 22 non-conference games. The over is 4-0 in Jayhawks last 4 games in September.
The Nicholls State Colonels are an experienced team that hung around with Texas A&M on the road last year and nearly beat the Georgia Bulldogs the year before. Nicholls State isn't your typical FCS squad that collects a paycheck and takes a beating on national TV. However, the Kansas Jayhawks are quietly turning the corner despite the lack of results, as there is some talent on both sides of the ball and all of the returning players have to be tired of being treated like the punching bag of the sport. This is the perfect chance for Kansas to kind of set the tone with a feel good comfortable win. The Jayhawks are going to score some points in this game and should be able to open it up.
