The UMass Minutemen and the Georgia Southern Eagles face off on Saturday in week 2 college football action.
The UMASS Minutemen will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season, coming in a 55-21 loss to Boston College in their last outing. Ross Comis led UMASS with 145 yards and a touchdown on 9 of 13 passing, while Andrew Ford racked up 78 yards and a pair of interceptions on 9 of 18 passing. Jordan Fredericks had a team-high 21 rushing yards while Marquis Young and Michael Curtis each had a rushing score in the loss. Andy Isabella had a UMASS-leading 95 receiving yards while Jessie Britt had a team-high 5 receptions and Jordan Fredericks added a touchdown grab. Bryton Barr led the UMASS defense with 9 tackles while Brice McAllister recorded 8 tackles in the losing effort.

The Georgia Southern Eagles will look to keep their momentum going after a 37-6 beatdown of South Carolina State in their last outing. Shai Werts led the Eagles’ option offense with 3 rushing touchdowns and 163 rushing yards on 22 carries, while Wesley Field and Monteo Garrett each contributed a rushing touchdown as well in the winning effort. The Eagles’ defensive squad recorded 2 sacks and an interception as a unit, while Monquavion Brinson led the Eagles with 6 tackles and Joshua Moon chipped in 5 tackles for the Eagles.
Massachusetts is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games on grass and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS loss while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against the Sun Belt. Georgia Southern is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 games following a win.
Georgia Southern’s option offense can be extremely hard to stop, but the issue is that the Eagles have had a hard time covering spreads at home this season. UMASS was torn up against Boston College, but a lot of the yardage came through the air and Georgia Southern doesn’t really throw the ball. I like UMASS to get back to the form of the team that we saw put up 63 points on Duquesne to start the year, so I’ll side with the Minutemen on the road to not only cover but to win outright.
