TV: SEC

We have some college football action from the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium at Hollingsworth Field in Oxford, MS as the Southern Illinois Salukis take on the Ole Miss Rebels.

The Southern Illinois Salukis will look for a huge upset to build on a 49-10 rout of Murray State to start the Salukis on the right foot to start the year. Sam Straub threw for 107 yards and a touchdown on 16 of 29 passing, while also recording an interception and Matt DeSomer threw for a touchdown of his own in the win. D.J. Davis led SIU with 127 rushing yards on 19 carries, while Jonathan Mixon and the aforementioned DeSomer each had a rushing touchdown in the win. Darrell James and Nigel Kilby each had a touchdown grab and 29 yards to lead Southern Illinois, while Landon Lenoir led the Salukis with 5 catches. The Salukis also had three defensive scores, with a pair of fumble recoveries for a touchdown along with a pick-six.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The Ole Miss Rebels will look to keep their momentum going after a massive 47-27 neutral site win over Texas Tech in their season opener. Jordan Ta’Amu threw for 336 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 22 of 32 passing, while Scottie Phillips led the Rebels on the ground with 16 carries for a whopping 204 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. DaMarkus Lodge logged a team-high 96 receiving yards on 6 catches, while A.J. Brown came right behind with 93 receiving yards and a team-high 7 catches with a receiving touchdown as well. D.K. Metcalf added 4 catches for 81 yards and a touchdown grab of his own. Jaylon Jones added a kick return touchdown for the Rebels’ special teams unit, while also recording a team-high 7 tackles. Zedrick Woods and Montreal Custis each added 7 tackles of their own in the winning effort.

Trends will be updated when they’ve been released.

Southern Illinois beat down on Murray State and the Salukis have a history of keeping things tight against FBS opposition, including just a 13-point loss to a high-powered Memphis offense last season and an 8-point loss to FAU the year before. The problem is, Ole Miss is much better than both of those teams, and not only did I nail the Rebels winning outright last week, Ole Miss pummelled Texas Tech by 20 points. I’m calling it now, Ole Miss is going to be a dark horse to at the very least play in one of the New Year’s Six games, as this team has all the tools to get there. I’ll lay the points in a game that the Rebels control from start to finish.
