The Penn State Nittany Lions will be visiting the Pittsburgh Panthers in a fun college football matchup from Heinz Field on Saturday, September 8.

Penn State survived a scare in their opening game against Appalachian State, eking out a 45-38 win in overtime. The score was all knotted up at 10 when Penn State broke through with 14 points in the third quarter. The Mountaineers made it interesting with 28 points in the final quarter to send it to OT.

Trace McSorley posted a pretty solid line in Penn State’s opener, going 21-of-36 for 230 yards and one TD. The big damage came on the ground though, as McSorley, Miles Sanders and Ricky Slade combined for five rush TDs.

As for Pitt, they logged a victory in their opening game versus the Albany Great Danes, taking that one 33-7. Interestingly enough, all of the points in that matchup were scored in the first half.

Kenny Picked logged a nice outing in the Albany win, finishing with 154 yards, two TDs and a pick on 16-of-22 passing. The Panthers’ leading rusher was Qadree Ollison, who finished the day on seven carries for 73 yards and a 10.4 YPC average.

Penn State is 4-1-1 ATS in their last six non-conference games and 3-1-1 ATS in the last five versus the ACC. The Lions are also 18-7-2 ATS in their last 27 overall and 7-2 ATS in their last nine road games.

Meanwhile, the Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last four versus a team with a winning record and 8-20 ATS in their last 28 home games. Pitt is also 1-5-1 ATS in the last seven versus the Big Ten and 1-4-1 ATS in their last six games in September.

Nittany Lions fans are probably still nursing heart conditions from last week’s near-miss, and now they’ve got to transition back into a tough game against a rival opponent. Pittsburgh had a few growing pains themselves, but all in all looked pretty solid in their win. I don’t have a high confidence level in Penn State right now so I’m going Pitt for the cover here.
