Instate foes the Texas Southern Tigers and Texas State Bobcats take the field in college football action in week two.
The Texas Southern Tigers rode a strong defensive effort in kicking off 2018 with a 26-16 victory versus the UTPB Falcons. Texas Southern held a 363-297 yardage edge but were a bit sloppy with three turnovers and ten penalties.
Glen Cuillette led the Tigers in the air by hitting 19-33 for 235 yards and a pair of interceptions and three touchdowns. Brad Woodard was the top runner for Texas Southern with 78 yards on ten carries while Bobby Hartzog caught a 39 yard TD pass and had a 37 yard run. The Tigers special teams had a PAT blocked and returned by the Falcons for two points.
The Texas State Bobcats were outclassed on both sides of the football in a 35-7 defeat at Rutgers as a 17 point underdog to fall to 0-1. Texas State was outgained 423-169 and held a 4-3 turnover edge in a somewhat sloppy contest.
Bobcats quarterback Willie Jones III completed just 6-19 with an interception with Jah’Marae Sheread catching a 37 yard pass for the biggest offensive play for the offense. Jones and Anthony Taylor topped the Bobcats on the ground with 33 yards and 35 yards respectively. Texas State scored on a 51 yard pick six courtesy of Kordell Rodgers while Rutgers recovered a fumble in the end zone.
