The South Alabama Jaguars will take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium in college football activity.
The Jaguars come into this game with a 1-3 record on the year. South Alabama took out Texas State in their third game 41-31, but otherwise has fallen to LA Tech 30-26, Oklahoma State 55-13 and Memphis 52-35.
In the Memphis game, South Alabama QB Evan Orth put up 360 yards and three touchdowns, with Jamarcus Way getting most of the work from 10 grabs, 185 yards and a TD. On the ground, Tra Minter led the Jaguars with 35 yards and a score.
Over on the App State side, they’re 2-1 on the young season. The Mountaineers opened up with a 45-38 loss to Penn State, but then beat Charlotte 45-9 and Gardner-Webb 72-7 with a cancelled game against Southern Miss in the middle.
In the Gardner-Webb game, Appalachian State QB Zac Thomas posted 185 yards with a TD, and D’Andre Hicks logged 150 yards and a score. Dominique Heath led the Mountaineers receivers with 11 yards and two TDs on four grabs.
The Jaguars are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games overall and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five on turf. South Alabama is also 7-17 ATS in their last 24 road games and 2-14 ATS in their last 16 following an ATS win.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineers are 4-0 ATS in their last four after a straight-up win and 5-0 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. App State is also 4-0 ATS in their last four in September and 7-0 ATS in their last seven overall.
South Alabama isn’t as bad as their record dictates, as (for the most part) they’ve been putting up good amounts of points. The issue is defense; the Jags have allowed at least 30 points in every game.
As for App State, they’ve had strong efforts in all three games and were able to hang with a very good Penn State team in their opener. I don’t doubt the Mountaineers will win here obviously, but I think South Alabama is just good enough to sneak in and cover—even though App State has been very good against the spread lately.
