The Auburn Tigers and the Mississippi State Bulldogs meet in a week 6 SEC conference college football matchup from Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, MS on Saturday evening.
The Auburn Tigers will look to build on a 24-13 win over Southern Miss to improve to 4-1 in their last outing. Jarrett Stidham has thrown for 963 yards, 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on 63.1% passing while JaTarvious Whitlow has rushed for a team-high 326 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. Darius Clayton leads Auburn with 188 receiving yards while Ryan Davis has a team-high 21 receptions this season. As a team, Auburn is averaging 376.2 yards of total offense and 32.6 points per game this season. The Tigers are also stout defensively, allowing just 92.8 rushing yards and 12.6 points per game this season, good for 8th and 3rd in the FBS respectively.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs will look to get their first conference win of the year after falling to 3-2 and 0-2 in SEC play with a 13-7 loss to Florida in their last outing. Nick Fitzgerald has thrown for 640 yards, 4 touchdowns and a pair of interceptions while Keytaon Thompson has tossed for 397 yards, 5 touchdowns and a pick. Auburn is 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 conference games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 road games. Mississippi State is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 home games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 conference matchups while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games overall. The under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
I know points with a home dog like Mississippi State is tempting, especially when you consider how tough of a venue Starkville is to go on the road and play. However, the Bulldogs have some issues on offense that shouldn’t be happening, and those were exposed against Florida. Don’t get me wrong, the Gators are a much better team than they were last year, but Fitzgerald is struggling right now, and that won’t fly against an Auburn defence that suffocates opposing offenses and neutralizes the ground game. Auburn had a bit of a look-ahead against Southern Miss, but this was the one they were looking ahead to and I expect Auburn to come out focused and win this one by a touchdown so I’ll lay the points with Auburn here.
