The UCLA Bruins will travel to Memorial Stadium (Berkeley, CA) to take on the California Golden Bears this Saturday night in College Football action.

The UCLA Bruins are still searching for their first win with Chip Kelly at the helm as the Bruins fell to 0-5 (0-2 Pac 12) on the season after being defeated by the 10th ranked Washington Huskies, 31-24, this past Saturday. UCLA did a nice job fighting to stay in the game as they pulled within a 24-17 margin early in the 4th quarter after trailing 24-7 at halftime, however, couldn’t pull off the upset victory a 2-yd Myles Gaskin run for the Huskies gave Washington a 31-17 lead with just 3:42 remaining. UCLA was outgained by Washington by a 462-422 margin and committed a turnover in the loss. Leading the way for the Bruins was RB Joshua Kelley who had 125 rushing yards and a TD on 20 carries against the tough Huskies defense. On the season, UCLA is averaging 18.4 ppg on 334.0 total yards per game (195.4 passing yds/g; 138.6 rushing yds/g). Offensively, UCLA has been led by QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson who has completed 57.4% of his passes for 5 TD & 3 INT while averaging 186.4 passing yds/g. The top targets for the Thompson Robinson have been Theo Howard (4.6 rec/g; 52.8 yds/g; 2 TD), Caleb Wilson (3.6 rec/g; 48.6 yds/g; TD), and Chase Cota (1.4 rec/g; 19.6 yds/g). Leading the way for the Bruins backfield has been the trio of Joshua Kelley (10.8 att/g; 69.0 yds/g; TD), Kazmeir Allen (5.2 att/g; 35.4 yds/g; TD), and Bolu Olorunfunmi (6.2 att/g; 17.0 yds/g; 4 TD). Defensively, UCLA is allowing their opponents to average 36.4 ppg on 429.6 total yards (243.8 passing yds/g; 185.8 rushing yds/g).

The California Golden Bears lost their 2nd straight game and fell to 3-2 (0-2 Pac-12) on the season after being defeated by the Arizona Wildcats, 24-17, this past Saturday. California outgained Arizona by a 476-265 margin and won the 1st down battle by a 25-13 margin but couldn’t come away with the victory as they committed 4 turnovers and allowed the Wildcats defense to score 14 points. On the season, California is averaging 26.2 ppg on 410.0 total yards per game (221.6 passing yds/g; 188.4 rushing yds/g). Offensively, California has been going with both QB Chase Garbers & Brandon McIIwain, however, it looks as if McIIwain is currently the top QB for the Golden Bears. McIIwain has completed 66.3% of his passes for 2 TD & 5 INT while averaging 107.0 passing yds/g however, is also a major threat to do damage with his legs as he has 4 rushing TD’s and is averaging 71.8 rushing yds/g. The top receivers for the Golden Bears have been Kanawai Noa (4.3 rec/g; 50.5 yds/g; TD), Vic Wharton III (4.2 rec/g; 37.4 yds/g), and Jordan Duncan (2.8 rec/g; 35.0 yds/g; 3 TD). In the backfield for California has been Patrick Laird who had 2 TD’s on the season and is averaging 58.6 yds/g on 16.4 att/g. Defensively, California is allowing their opponents to average 24.8 ppg on 331.4 total yards per game (175.6 passing yds/g; 155.8 rushing yds/g).

The Bruins are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 conference games and 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games following a ATS win. The Golden Bears are 4-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record and 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 home games.

It’s not been the start the UCLA fans envisioned when Chip Kelly became head coach as it’s been ugly on both sides of the ball for the Bruins as they rank just 125th in scoring offense & 110th in scoring defense. California certainly has some talent on both sides of the ball, however, they’ve really been down in by turnovers as they’ve already committed 14 turnovers on the season and currently have a turnover margin of -4. UCLA isn’t a great team, however, they’ve showed some signs of life and as I liked that the Bruins defense was able to be successful in both the ground and air against one of the best defensive teams in the country in Washington, I think UCLA will do enough in this one with the points to cover.
