Southern Mississippi played Auburn tough and pulled within one possession early in the 4th quarter on a 12-yard TD reception by Quez Watkins however, couldn’t find the scoreboard again against the Tigers tough defense. Southern Mississippi was outgained by Auburn by a 341-260 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 3-1 margin. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was QB Jack Abraham who completed 30 of 44 passes for 215 yards, 1 TD, & 2 INT. Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

The North Texas Mean Green improved to 5-1 (1-1 C-USA) on the season after defeating the UTEP Miners, 27-24, this past Saturday. North Texas had more of a battle than they expected agianst the 0-6 Miners and had to rely on their defense to win the game after UTEP got the ball back, trailing by just three with 2:45 left in regulation. North Texas outgained UTEP by a 428-417 margin and won the turnover battle by a 2-0 margin. Leading the way for the Mean Green was QB Mason Fine who completed 23 of 34 passes for 2 TD. On the season, North Texas is averaging 41.5 ppg on 483.0 total yards (328.5 passing yds/g; 154.5 rushing yds/g). Offensively, North Texas has been led by QB Mason Fine who has completed 64.9% of his passes for 15 TD & 1 INT while averaging 319.7 passing yds/g. The top receivers for the Mean Green and Fine have been Rico Bussey Jr. (6.8 rec/g; 88.7 yds/g; 8 TD), Jalen Guyton (4.0 rec/g; 57.7 yds/g; 3 TD), and Jaelon Darden (3.7 rec/g; 55.7 yds/g; 2 TD). Leading the way for the North Texas backfield has been the trio of Loren Easly (18.5 att/g; 96.5 yds/g; 4 TD), Nic Smith (6.7 att/g; 35.0 yds/g; 2 TD), and DeAndre Torrey (8.3 att/g; 33.0 yds/g; 4 TD). Defensively, North Texas is holding their opponents to an average of 19.3 ppg on 334.7 total yards per game (229.8 passing yds/g; 104.9 rushing yds/g).

The Golden Eagles are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games vs. a team with a winning road record and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 conference games. The Mean Green are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games on field turf however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in October.

Southern Mississippi once again has a tremendous passing game as their passing offense ranks 14th in College Football, but what has been more impressive is their defense that was impressive agianst a good Auburn team and currently ranks 23rd in scoring defense. North Texas has a great QB and started off the season on a tear, however, it’s been ugly last two weeks as after losing to Louisiana Tech at home, the Mean Green almost were upset by one of the worst teams in College Football in the UTEP Miners last week. I think North Texas is a good team and certainly a tough team to beat at home, but as I think Southern Mississippi with have some success with their passing attack and that their defense will keep this one close, I’m taking the Golden Eagles and the points in this one.
