The UTEP Miners and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs meet in week 8 C-USA college football action from Joe Aillet Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The UTEP Miners will look for a huge road upset for their first win of the season after falling to 0-6 with a 27-24 loss to North Texas in their last outing. Kai Locksley has thrown for 527 yards, 2 touchdowns and 3 picks while Ryan Metz has racked up 412 yards passing with 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Locksley leads the Miners in rushing with 363 yards and 4 touchdowns while Quadraiz Wadley has 358 rushing yards and 3 scores. Warren Redix leads the Miners’ receivers with 20 catches for 244 yards this season. As a team, UTEP is averaging 315.7 yards of total offense and 16.5 points per game this season.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will look to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 5 games, including a 31-3 win over UTSA in their last outing. J’Mar Smith has thrown for 1,565 yards, 10 touchdowns and 6 interceptions on 57.9% passing while Jaqwis Dancy has 276 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns on the year. Adrian Hardy leads the Bulldogs in receiving with 33 catches for 560 yards and 4 TDs, while Teddy Veal has 28 catches for 348 yards and Rhashid Bonnette has 285 receiving yards this season. As a team, Louisiana Tech is averaging 411.8 yards of total offense and 28.7 points per game this season.
UTEP is 3-7-2 ATS in their last 12 road games and 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall while the under is 18-7-1 in their last 26 games against a team with a winning record. Louisiana Tech is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 conference games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 games following a win. The over is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
I can understand Louisiana Tech being the favorite at home here, but even against UTEP, I can’t justify laying almost four touchdowns on the road. Yes, UTEP is winless and is one of the worst teams in the conference, but the Miners haven’t lost any of their last 3 games by more than double digits, and just hung around with North Texas (who I feel is the best offensive team in C-USA this season), losing to the Mean Green only by a field goal as 26-point underdogs. Louisiana Tech is responsible for North Texas’ lone loss this season, but laying this many points just because seems kind of off to me, so I’ll take a shot at UTEP and the points here.
