The North Carolina Tar Heels and the Syracuse Orange will be matching up at Carrier Dome on Saturday in ACC college football activity.
The Tar Heels come into this one at 1-4 on the year. North Carolina’s lone victory came against Pittsburgh earlier in the season, but otherwise they’ve dropped to Cal, East Carolina, Miami (FL) and Virginia Tech.
In the Hokies game, UNC QB Nathan Elliott was the lead passer on 147 yards and one TD, and Michael Carter led the rush with 18 carries for 165 yards. Carl Tucker was the top North Carolina receiver with two grabs for 123 yards.
As for Syracuse, they’re sitting at 4-2 this season. The Orange have taken out Western Michigan, Wagner, Florida State and UConn, but lost their last two to Clemson and Pitt.
In the Panthers game, Syracuse QB Eric Dungey logged 195 yards, one TD and two picks, and led the rush with 70 yards and a TD. Leading the receivers for the Orange was Jamal Custis with 70 yards on three grabs.
The Tar Heels are 5-1 ATS in their last six conference games and 5-1 ATS versus a team with a winning record. North Carolina is also 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine overall and 11-5 ATS in their last 16 in October.
Meanwhile, the Orange are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games in October and 4-1-1 ATS in their last six overall. Syracuse is 1-4-2 ATS versus a team with a losing record and 2-5 ATS in their last seven following an ATS loss.
After showing some flashes over their first few games, North Carolina hasn’t been able to get much of anything going, even though they lost to VT by just a field goal 22-19 in their last game. The Tar Heels’ big problem is putting up points, as they’ve gotten past 19 just once on the season.
On the Syracuse side, they seem to be showing some real spark this season, and had a couple of things broken their way they could be undefeated right now.
I’m on the Orange bandwagon and not jumping off here.
