The Purdue Boilermakers and Michigan State Spartans meet Saturday in college football action at Spartan Stadium.
The Purdue Boilermakers look for a fifth straight victory and hope to avoid the letdown after beating the Ohio State Buckeyes last week. The Purdue Boilermakers have won each of their last three road games. David Blough is completing 66.5 percent of his passes for 2,073 yards, 13 touchdowns and two interceptions. Blough has three touchdown passes in four of his last five games. Rondale Moore and Isaac Zico have combined for 1,177 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns while Brycen Hopkins has 22 receptions. The Purdue Boilermakers ground game is averaging 176.7 yards per contest, and D.J. Knox leads the way with 668 yards and eight touchdowns. Defensively, Purdue is allowing 22.7 points and 433.1 yards per game. Markus Bailey leads the Purdue Boilermakers with 58 tackles, Cornel Jones has 3.5 sacks and Kenneth Major has three interceptions.
The Michigan State Spartans look for a spark of consistency here after splitting their last six games. The Michigan State Spartans have won six of their last eight home games. Brian Lewerke is completing 56 percent of his passes for 1,653 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Lewerke has one or less touchdown passes in seven of his last 11 games. Felton Davis III and Cody White have combined for 774 receiving yards and six touchdowns while Darrell Stewart Jr. has 17 receptions. The Michigan State Spartans ground game is averaging 107.5 yards per contest, and Connor Heyward leads the way with 194 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Michigan State is allowing 22.1 points and 355.3 yards per game. Joe Bachie leads the Michigan State Spartans with 53 tackles, Kenny Willekes has 5.5 sacks and Khari Willis has two interceptions.
The Boilermakers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference games, 16-5-2 ATS in their last 23 road games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Spartans are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games on grass, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Boilermakers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Michigan State, 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings and the underdog is 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 meetings. The under is 7-1 in Boilermakers last 8 road games and the over is 4-1 in Spartans last 5 home games.
The Purdue Boilermakers are enjoying their best stretch in years, as they've won four straight games and are coming off a monster home upset over the Ohio State Buckeyes. Purdue has scored at least 30 points in each of its last five games and is averaging 45.6 points in its last three games. The Michigan State Spartans have been one of the more inconsistent teams in the country, as they get drilled at home by Northwestern, beat Penn State on the road as big underdogs and do very little last week against their rival Michigan. Assuming the trend continues, this should be the week the Spartans decide to show up and produce a victory. While Purdue is probably the better team and is playing better football, I am concerned about a letdown spot. It's not going to be easy to go on the road and keep that same focus after just winning the biggest game in years for the program. The Michigan State Spartans also haven't lost back-to-back games since November of 2016 and are still a solid defensive team, despite their offensive struggles. I don't love it, but I'm giving Michigan State the edge here at home in this near toss-up.
