The Akron Zips will travel Rynearson Stadium to take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Akron Zips had their 2-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 4-4 (2-3 MAC) on the season after being defeated by the Northern Illinois Huskies, 36-26, this past Thursday. Akron did a great job fighting back into the game after trailing by a 27-10 margin early in the 3rd quarter however, Northern Illinois was able to pull away after a 23-yard pick 6 by the Huskies gave Northern Illinois a 10-point lead with 9:05 left in regulation. Akron was outgained by a 484-361 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Zips was Kato Nelson who completed 18 of 26 passes for 299 passing yards and 2 TD. Offensively, Akron is averaging 22.9 ppg on 321.0 total yards per game (209.9 passing yds/g; 111.1 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Akron has been led by QB Kato Nelson who has completed 52.6% of his passes for 11 TD & 7 INT while averaging 205.9 passing yds/g. Nelson is also the 2nd leading rusher for the Zips as he has 1 rushing TD on the season while averaging 39.1 yds/g on 13.1 att/g. The top receiving targets for the Zips have been Andre Williams (4.5 rec/g; 67.5 yds/g; 5 TD), Kwadarrius Smith (2.7 rec/g; 49.4 yds/g; 3 TD), Nate Stewart (2.8 rec/g; 35.0 yds/g; TD), and Jonah Morris (2.1 rec/g; 34.0 yds/g; TD). The Eastern Michigan Eagles improved to 5-5 (3-3 MAC) on the season after defeating the Central Michigan Chippewas, 17-7, this past Saturday. In a tight, low-scoring game, Eastern Michigan scored 10 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to pull away and secure the victory. Eastern Michigan outgained Central Michigan by a 349-138 margin and forced the Chippewas into committing 4 turnovers in the victory. Leading the way for the Eagles was RB Shaq Vann who had 114 rushing yards and a TD on 13 carries. On the season, Eastern Michigan is averaging 27.5 ppg on 377.6 total yards per game (347.2 passing yds/g; 130.4 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Eastern Michigan has been led by QB Tyler Wiegers who has completed 66.5% of his passes for 11 TD & 2 INT while averaging 161.9 passing yds/g on 21.5 att/g. QB Mike Glass III, who is questionable due to a leg injury, has also been effective at the QB position as he completed 59.8% of his passes for 6 TD & INT while averaging 117.1 passing yds per game. Glass is duel threat QB who actually leads the Eagles in rushing as he has 6 rushing TD’s on the season while averaging 55.9 yds/g. The top receivers for the Eagles have been Blake Banham (5.1 rpg, 68.2 yds/g; 5 TD), Arthur Jackson III (3.6 rec/g; 46.9 yds/g; 3 TD); Line Latu (2.1 rec/g; 36.4 yds/g; 3 TD), and Mathew Sexton (3.2 rec/g; 31.3 yds/g; 3 TD). Leading the way in the backfield has been Shaq Vann who has 5 rushing TD’s while averaging 55.3 rushing yds/g on 13.0 att/g.
The Zips are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 conference games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss. The Eagles are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a ATS loss and 23-10 ATS in their last 33 games overall.
Akron is a defensive minded team however, they have to be encouraged by their offensive performance agianst a very good Northern Illinois defense. Eastern Michigan has won 3 of their last 4 games however, and also have been led by their defense that ranks 50th in total defense. The line has yet to be released as Akron’s QB Keto Nelson had to leave last game with an ankle injury is uncertain, however, even if Nelson is able to go, my initial thoughts are to take Eastern Michigan as they’re bit more balanced of a football team and play tough at home. Check back later when the line has been posted.
