The Rice Owls lost their 9th consecutive game and dropped to 1-9 (0-6 C-USA) on the season after being defeated by the UTEP Miners, 34-26, this past Saturday. Rice fought back from a 27-3 deficit at halftime to make it a one-possession game midway through the 4th quarter, however, the offensive couldn’t come through late and allowed UTEP to pick up their first win of the season. Rice was outgained by UTEP by a 410-383 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 3-2 margin. Leading the way for the Owls was WR Austin Trammell who had 112 receiving yards and 2 TD’s on 8 receptions. On the season, Rice is averaging 19.6 ppg on 324.4 total yards per game (184.9 passing yds/g; 139.5 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Rice has been led by their backfield duo of Austin Walter (12.9 att/g; 54.3 yds/g; 4 TD) and Emmanuel Esukpa (15.3 att/g; 57.6 yds/g; 3 TD). Rice has recently turned to freshman QB Wiley Green who has completed 52.0% of his passes for 525 yards, 3 TD, & 4 INT in his two starts this season. The leading receivers for the Owls have been Austin Trammell (5.5 rec/g; 59.0 yds/g; 3 TD) and Aaron Cephus (3.3 rec/g; 48.4 yds/g; 5 TD). Defensively, Rice is allowing their opponents to average 38.5 ppg on 443.5 total yards per game (264.3 passing yds/g; 179.2 rushing yds/g).
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs had their 3-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 6-3 (4-1 C-USA) on the season after being defeated by the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 45-3, this past Saturday. Louisiana Tech was overmatched on both sides of the ball and couldn’t fight back after falling behind by a 21-3 margin after the 1st quarter. Louisiana Tech was outgained by Mississippi State by a 532-238 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 1-0 margin. Leading the way for Louisiana Tech was RB Kam McKnight who had 59 rushing yards on 13 carries. On the season, Louisiana Tech is averaging 25.2 ppg on 373.8 total yards per game (231.7 passing yds/g; 142.1 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Louisiana Tech has been led by QB J’Mar Smith who has completed 56.0% of his passes for 12 TD & 6 INT while averaging 226.4 passing yds/g. The top receiving threats for Smith and the Bulldogs have been Adrian Hardy (4.3 rec/g; 73.0 yds/g; 5 TD), Teddy Veal (5.6 rec/g; 60.0 yds/g; TD), and Rhashid Bonnette (3.1 rec/g; 42.9 yds/g; TD). Leading the way for the Louisiana Tech backfield has been the duo of Jaqwis Dancy (12.4 att/g; 75.9 yds/g; 6 TD) and Kam McKnight (7.3 att/g; 31.2 yds/g; 5 TD). Defensively, Louisiana Tech is allowing their opponents to average 24.6 ppg on 368.6 total yards per game (197.7 passing yds/g; 170.9 rushing yds/g).
The Owls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record however, are just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Bulldogs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS loss and 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games after allowing more then 40 points in their previous game.
It’s been a season to forget for Rice as not only have they lost 9 in a row, they let probably their best chance to pick up a conference win slip through their fingers by falling to UTEP. Rice has struggled on both ends of the field this season as they rank 123rd in scoring offense and 121st in scoring defense. Louisiana Tech is solid C-USA team that rank 47th in total defense and as I think the Bulldogs bounce back after their tough matchup against Mississippi State last week, I think Louisiana Tech does enough at home to cover this large spread.
