The North Texas Mean Green and the Utah State Aggies meet in the New Mexico Bowl from Dreamstyle Stadium in college football action.
The North Texas Mean Green come into this bowl game with a record of 9-3, including a 5-3 conference record and a win over a power-5 team with a 44-17 beatdown of Arkansas as well on their resume. Mason Fine has thrown for 3,734 yards, 27 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on 64.6% passing while Deandre Torrey leads the Mean Green with 942 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns this season. Rico Bussey Jr. leads North Texas’ receiving corps with 68 catches for 1,017 yards and 12 touchdowns while Jalen Guyton has 50 catches for 702 yards and 5 touchdowns and Jaelon Darden has 46 catches for 567 yards and 4 TDs. As a team, North Texas is averaging 472.8 yards and 36.4 points per game this season.
The Utah State Aggies come into this game with a 10-2 record, including a 7-1 conference record that saw the Aggies on the brink of the Mountain West title game before falling in a tiebreaker game to Boise State by a final score of 33-24. Jordan Love has thrown for 3,208 yards, 28 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on 65.8% passing while the tandem of Darwin Thompson and Gerold Bright have combined for 1,736 yards and 22 rushing touchdowns this season. Ron’Quavion Tarver leads the Aggies with 62 catches for 676 yards and 7 touchdowns while Jalen Greene has 38 grabs for 538 yards and 5 touchdowns and Aaren Vaughns has 31 catches for 472 yards this season. As a team, Utah State is averaging 493.8 yards of total offense and 47.2 points per game this season, the 3rd-highest scoring output in FBS this season.
North Texas is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 10-3 ATS in their last 13 non-conference games while the under is 10-1 in their last 11 games following a win. Utah State is 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games overall and 4-15 ATS in their last 19 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 bowl games. The underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
You have two of the more high-powered offenses in the country going at it here, so the over could definitely be worth a look as North Texas and Utah State could go shot for shot in this one. However, while Utah State was prolific on offense this season, breaking the 40-point mark 8 times and the 50-point plateau 6 times, the Aggies’ head coach through that span, Matt Wells, will not be coaching this game after accepting the head coaching gig at Texas Tech. I’m not sure how much stock I can put into the Aggies without Wells calling the shots, so I’ll take a shot with North Texas as I feel the Mean Green can definitely keep this one within a touchdown if not win it outright.
