The Arizona Wildcats will try to show some significant improvements in the win column during the 2020 college football season.

After a disappointing 2019 campaign that saw Arizona finish at just 4-8 overall and 2-7 in the Pac-12 (last place), the Wildcats are hoping for a bounce-back college football season in 2020. It’s certainly going to be an uphill battle for Arizona, but five or six wins this year would be a big step in the right direction. Check back all season long for free college football picks and college football predictions at Sports Chat Place.

Let’s break down Arizona’s situation heading into 2020 and see if they’ve got a chance for improvement.

The Wildcats will maintain some familiar faces on the sideline for the time being this year, as both head coach Kevin Sumlin and offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone will be heading into their third seasons with the team. Paul Rhoads comes in as Arizona’s new defensive coordinator; he notably coached Iowa State from 2009-15 and brings a truckload of experience with him. This will likely be the proverbial do-or-die season for Sumlin and his crew, so we can expect the unexpected here.

It will also be interesting to see how sophomore quarterback Grant Gunnell fares after a promising freshman campaign. He managed 1,239 yards with nine TDs and one interception last year and most people expect Gunnell to continue developing. He’ll have a solid crop of returning skill position guys to work with. Provided depth on defense doesn’t prove itself to be a concern on the other side, I’m expecting lots of great things from this team.

Arizona also gets a bit of good news with the schedule. They’ll have three home games right out of the gate, and all are winnable matchups. The Wildcats will likely have some trouble with Stanford in that fourth game, but by then the team should have some rhythm and chemistry going. Once October comes the games will start getting more difficult, but by then the Wildcats could have three or four wins already and be feeling pretty good about themselves.

Pick: I’m optimistic about this Arizona squad in 2020, so I’m going with the over. The Hawaii opener is going to be huge, and assuming the Wildcats can survive that they’ll be on their way to a 3-0 start—already more than halfway to the total. I don’t see a whole lot of wins in the second half of the season; Oregon, USC, Utah and Washington in particular are going to be incredibly difficult matchups. Still, when the dust settles I think Arizona will have hit that five-win mark, or maybe even a couple more.
