Breaking Down the Duke Blue Devils Win Total
2020 College Football Season
Duke Blue Devils: 5.5 Wins -- Title Odds: 1000/1
Duke football had a pretty rough ride in the 2019 season, but the team has a good shot at faring better in 2020. Last year, the Blue Devils came out of the gate pretty well all things considered, but a stagnant five-game losing streak sealed their fate on the way to a 5-7 overall finish. Let’s take a closer look at Duke’s status heading into the 2020 season and break down their chances at hitting six wins.
Duke has the misfortune of being an average team in a conference filled with average-to-good teams (and the Clemson juggernaut). That means pretty much every ACC matchup will be very competitive, and the Blue Devils will have to be on point with each game in order to eke out those tight wins. In 2019 Duke finished far off the pace, with a 3-5 conference record that left the team one spot out of the basement in the Coastal Division.
With that being said, there’s reason for optimism with Duke in 2020. The team has some options at quarterback, and it’s looking like Clemson transfer Chase Brice could slot into that spot nicely. Brice had 1,023 pass yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions during the 2018 and 2019 seasons and should be a solid option.
The Blue Devils will also need to clean up on defense, as they lost their top two tacklers from last year in Koby Quansah and Dylan Singleton. Another big season from running back Deon Jackson would help immensely as well.
Duke’s schedule isn’t overly daunting, but there are some scary-looking matchups on there. Hitting the road on Halloween to go play Notre Dame will be the toughest game of the year, and the Blue Devils get to finish off the season with another rough road game in Miami.
That said, Duke certainly has a clear path to hit the six-win mark. A 3-0 start is certainly possible, and the Blue Devils could make some noise with an early road win at Pitt.
Pick: I’m higher on Duke this season than some others, so I’m going with the over. Provided the Blue Devils take care of business early in the season, there are certainly another three or four wins in conference play. Sure, there are a few matchups where Duke will get destroyed, and the team isn't going to scare anyone just yet, but all in all I think they’ll be competitive and should greatly improve last year’s poor results.
