Breaking Down the Miami Hurricanes Win Total
2020 College Football Season
Miami Hurricanes: 9 Wins -- Title Odds: 150/1
The Miami Hurricanes are coming off a pretty mediocre football season in 2019, but the team is projected to take a big step forward in 2020. Miami went 6-7 overall last year, good enough for a spot in the Independence Bowl, where the Hurricanes lost 14-0 to Louisiana Tech. This season, Miami will be looking to get back to a bowl game and come away with a victory this time. Let’s take a look at Miami’s current status and break down their chances at hitting 10 wins this season.
The ACC has been pretty competitive in recent years, and it’s a tough conference to gain traction in if you’re not a high-end team. Miami and five other schools all finished 4-4 in ACC play last year, and only two teams had better than a 5-3 record in that conference (Clemson and Virginia). Things should be pretty competitive in the ACC again this year, so the Hurricanes are going to have to play tight in those conference games if they want to stay on track for 10 victories.
Miami will have to fill in some production gaps from departed players; specifically linebacker Shaquille Quarterman, who was the Hurricanes’ leading tackler and an All-ACC First Team selection last year. Running back DeeJay Dallas and wide receiver KJ Osborn are also impact departures who will be playing in the NFL this season. The good news is that head coach Manny Diaz has another year of experience under his belt and should be able to minimize Miami’s losses.
Looking at the Hurricanes’ schedule, there’s certainly a path to double-digit wins here, but there’s not a lot of room for error. Miami needs to run the table in their three opening games to have some confidence going into a huge road game at Michigan State. The road game at Virginia Tech is going to be a very important matchup as well. How Miami plays versus teams like Virginia, Pitt and Florida State will go a long way toward their overall success.
Pick: I have to stick with the under here. Though I think Miami will make some strides forward this season, 10 wins is a little too much to jump on. The Hurricanes will have a stretch of four road games in six appearances, and there are just too many opportunities for the team to trip themselves up. Miami will still be a competitive ACC team, and a bowl game team, but probably no more than an eight- or nine-win team--which is still quite good compared to last year.
