Breaking Down the Virginia Tech Hokies Win Total
2020 College Football Season
Virginia Tech Hokies: 8 Wins -- Title Odds: 150/1
Virginia Tech had a solid football season in 2019, but the team missed out on a few big opportunities. The Hokies finished the season at 8-5 overall and one spot out of the Coastal Division title. Virginia Tech earned a bid in the Belk Bowl, but lost that game to Kentucky 37-30. This year the Hokies will be looking to get that division championship, and they’ve got their work cut out for them in a competitive conference. Let’s take a closer look at Virginia Tech’s current status and break down their chances at surpassing eight wins this year.
Last season featured some very bitter pills to swallow for the Hokies. They were one of just four teams in the ACC to have a conference record over .500 and primed to take the division, but a devastating loss to Virginia (whom they hadn’t lost to since 2003) completely deflated the season. The Cavaliers loom large on the schedule in the last regular-season game, and depending how things play out that matchup could decide the Coastal Division once again.
In 2020, head coach Justin Fuente will again be patrolling the sideline for Virginia Tech in his fifth season. A couple of notable absences from the squad this year will be tight end Dalton Keene, who went to the New England Patriots with the 101st pick in the NFL Draft, and safety Reggie Floyd, who signed as a UDFA with the Arizona Cardinals. The good news is that Virginia Tech has some options at quarterback this year (headlined by Hendon Hooker) and shouldn’t suffer a lot of bumps on offense.
Schedule-wise, there are a lot of different ways things could fall for Virginia Tech—and most of them hinge on how the Hokies come out of the gate. Virginia Tech only has one road game in the first five weeks, and on paper the only daunting matchup in that initial quintet is Penn State. If all the chips fall correctly, the Hokies could be sitting at 7-0 by the time the Louisville road trip comes along. A few more division wins in the remaining games and we’re looking at double-digit victories for this team.
Pick: I’m pretty high on Virginia Tech this year, so I’m going with the over here. Under the strong leadership of Fuente there shouldn’t be a whole lot of talent turnover and the Hokies should start the season off strong. A little early-season momentum could carry them through the three road games in four dates later on, then the climax comes with a rematch against Virginia. The Cavaliers seem primed to take a step back in 2020, so I like the Hokies to get some revenge and take the Coastal Division this season.
