The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will have to maximize their talents in a difficult ACC if they want to make a bowl game in the 2020 college football season.
Wake Forest was competitive in a tough football conference in 2019, powering their way to an 8-5 overall record and a trip to the Pinstripe Bowl. The Demon Deacons’ season ended in disappointment there however, falling to Michigan State 27-21. Wake Forest will look to get back to a bowl game in 2020, and hopefully come away with a victory this time. Let’s take a look at Wake Forest’s current status and break down their chances at hitting seven wins this season.
All in all, 2019 was a pretty good year for Wake Forest. Sure, they were just .500 in ACC play at 4-4, but only four teams had better records in the conference—one being the almighty Clemson juggernaut. Considering the difficulty level there, .500 is pretty good. In any case, it’s bound to be more of the same this season in the ACC, as the Demon Deacons will have a lot of solid conference teams to deal with.
Wake Forest will have a few new faces this season due to the yearly turnover. Specifically, linebacker Justin Strnad (244 tackles, eight sacks, four picks in four seasons at Wake) and offensive lineman Justin Herron have gone to the NFL, the fourth straight year a Deacons player has been selected in the draft. Fortunately the Wake Forest coaching staff stays intact; head coach Dave Clawson and OC Warren Ruggiero enter their seventh seasons and DC Lyle Hemphill goes into his second. The major piece that crew will have to work out is at quarterback; Jamie Newman transferred out and it’s looking like sophomore Sam Hartman is the next man up. The shift could disrupt what was a pretty potent offense in 2019.
There’s a path to seven or maybe even eight wins for Wake Forest this season, but it’s not going to be easy. Provided the Deacons hit the ground running in their first three games, all three are winnable. Wake will obviously have issues with the big dogs on the schedule in Clemson, Notre Dame, Florida State and Miami, but victories over Duke, Syracuse and Boston College would go a long way toward gaining ground in the conference.
Pick: This one is tough, but I have to go under. Wake Forest will likely take a few games to get their offense figured out, and pretty much every matchup on the schedule is a big one. Sure, if all goes well (especially at the beginning of the season) the Demon Deacons could find themselves back in a bowl game, but with those top-tier teams sprinkled into the schedule it’ll be hard for Wake to find a rhythm. This will likely be more of a developmental year as the team retools their weapons and strategies. Five or six wins seems more accurate right now.
