The Oklahoma State Cowboys have a great shot at making a big bowl game and finishing near the top of the Big 12 Conference in the 2020 college football season.
Oklahoma State showed some promise on the football field last season, but ultimately their campaign ended on a sour note. The Cowboys finished 8-5 overall and earned a trip to the Texas Bowl, but fell to Texas A&M 24-21 in a tough defeat. In 2020, Oklahoma State will be looking to improve their record from last season, bouncing back with a bowl win. Let’s take a closer look at Oklahoma State’s current status and break down their chances at hitting nine wins.
All things considered, Oklahoma State did well in a competitive Big 12 conference last season, going 5-4. Only nationally-ranked Baylor and Oklahoma were above the Cowboys there. In any case, it’s going to be another competitive year and Oklahoma State will need every conference victory they can get. The Cowboys will certainly get their opportunities for revenge; they have road games with both Baylor and Oklahoma this season.
The good news is head coach Mike Gundy is back at the helm in his 16th season. He’ll have to deal with some turnover as always, but oddly enough no Oklahoma State player was taken in the NFL Draft this season—the first time that’s happened since 2008. In any case, this year will be key in the development of QB Spencer Sanders, who was sidelined by a thumb injury in 2019. With a little help from the skill players, Sanders will make a dangerous duo with Chuba Hubbard. That pair accounted for 83 percent of the Cowboys' carries last year, so OK State would benefit greatly from another impact player or two sharing that huge load.
If all goes well this season, Oklahoma State has a path to double-digit wins. The Cowboys will have to stay on point the entire season to make that happen however, as there are plenty of tough-looking matchups on the schedule--especially late. Coming right out of the gate is Oregon State, then after the bye week Oklahoma State has to play five road games in an eight-game stretch. The first few games are going to be key for the Cowboys to establish a rhythm and an identity for the season.
Pick: I’m going with the over here. I was a little hesitant looking at Oklahoma State’s schedule down the stretch; there are some really difficult games there. Oklahoma, Texas, Baylor; all are going to be huge matchups but if Oklahoma State plays to their capabilities I think they can hold their own. This should be another interesting season in the Big 12, but I'm optimistic on the Cowboys.
