Breaking Down the Kansas Jayhawks Win Total
2020 College Football Season
Kansas Jayhawks: 3.5 Wins -- Title Odds: 500/1
Kansas had a pretty rough football season in 2019. The Jayhawks finished at just 3-9 overall and 1-8 in the Big 12, leaving the team in last place in the conference standings. This season, Kansas will attempt to make some steps forward in the win column, and if all goes well the Jayhawks could be in position to contend for a bowl bid. Let’s take a closer look at Kansas’ current status and break down their chances at reaching four wins in 2020.
Looking at Kansas’ 2019 season, it’s difficult to lift many positives. The Jayhawks have been ineligible for a bowl game in 11 straight seasons, and have a streak of consecutive road losses to Big 12 teams that stands at a whopping 45 games. Kansas started out well enough at 2-1 with wins over Indiana State and at Boston College, but could only muster a three-point home win versus Texas Tech the rest of the way.
The good news is that head coach Les Miles, OC Brent Dearmon and defensive coordinator DJ Eliot have a season under their collective belt and should have a day-to-day rhythm established. That crew will have their work cut out for them this year, as 25 players (and 13 starters) ran out of eligibility this offseason. Notably, OL Hakeem Adeniji was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Long story short, the Jayhawks need some talent. They’ve got a class of 26 commitments coming in this season, including six WRs and five OL guys.
Looking at Kansas’ schedule there are a few wins to be had, but also a lot of tough matchups on the slate. The Jayhawks have to travel to Baylor, West Virginia, Texas Tech, Kansas State and Oklahoma. The Big 12 is set to be very competitive once again this year and those games are pretty intimidating on paper. After the open week, it’s the pummeling combo of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and TCU, and it’ll be difficult for the Jayhawks to find much success late in the season.
Pick: I’d like to be higher on Kansas than I am, but I have to stick with the under. There are myriad obstacles for the Jayhawks to overcome this season, from acclimating new players to surviving tough conference matchups to simply finding ways to be competitive on the field. I see Kansas maybe pulling off a Big 12 upset at some point during the season, but otherwise this looks like another rebuilding year.
