The Colorado State Rams have some pretty high expectations in the 2020 college football season compared to a year ago.
Colorado State had a pretty rough football campaign in 2019. The Rams finished at just 4-8 overall, 3-5 in the Mountain West and fifth place in the division—just ahead of winless New Mexico in the basement. In 2020, Colorado State will attempt to rack up a few more wins, do some damage in the conference and hopefully get back to a bowl game. Let’s take a closer look at Colorado State’s current status and break down their chances at hitting seven wins this season.
Colorado State had the misfortune of being in a very top-heavy division last season, as Boise State, Air Force and Utah State were the only teams in the Mountain to win more than four conference games. Things were bad from the get-go however, as the Rams opened up the season at just 1-5 and despite a three-game win streak that begin in October, the team couldn’t gain much ground otherwise. The sketchy performance led to head coach Mike Bobo stepping down after his fifth season.
Taking over head coaching duties this season is Steve Addazio. He and the staff were able to cobble together a pretty strong roster, but a handful of starters transferred out once Bobo left. It will be a challenge for the team to find an identity and playing rhythm under the new regime; we probably won’t know for sure who Colorado State is in 2020 until sometime around their bye week.
There are seven potential wins on the schedule for the Rams this season, but in order for the team to make bowl eligibility they’re going to have to get the victories early. Colorado State has a tough matchup with Colorado right out of the gate, but there are winnable home games out there versus Northern Colorado, Fresno State and New Mexico. Long story short, Colorado State is probably going to have to get to six wins prior to November, as there are three really difficult-looking road matchups during that month. Victories will be very difficult to come by starting with that San Diego State road game.
Pick: I’m going under here; there’s simply too much uncertainty around the Rams right now, and the back end of the schedule is pretty brutal. Considering the Mountain Division is really competitive right now, I don’t see Colorado State surviving too many of their conference matchups. This looks like a rebuilding year to gear up for the future under Addazio.
