Breaking Down the Utah State Aggies Win Total
2020 College Football Season
Utah State Aggies: 5 Wins -- Title Odds: 500/1
Utah State had a pretty solid football campaign in 2019, though it ended in disappointment. The Aggies went 7-6 overall and earned a trip to the Frisco Bowl, where they lost 51-41 to Kent State. In 2020, Utah State will return to a competitive division and try to earn themselves another bowl game invitation—and hopefully a victory this time. Let’s take a closer look at Utah State’s current status and break down their chances at hitting six wins this year.
All things considered, Utah State’s Mountain West performance last year was pretty darn good. The Aggies held their own with a 6-2 conference record, bettered only by nationally-ranked Air Force (7-1) and Boise State (8-0). Utah State also outperformed co-division winners Hawaii and San Diego State out West, who both finished 5-3.
Taking the helm once again for Utah State is head coach Gary Andersen, who comes into his sixth overall season and second straight. New offensive coordinator Bodie Reeder and Co-DCs Frank Maile and Stacy Collins round out the top end of the coaching staff. They’ll have some retooling to do following the departure of quarterback Jordan Love, who was selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Packers. There will be a multi-player QB battle happening this summer, likely stretching near the beginning of the season.
Looking at the schedule, Utah State has some difficult areas to navigate but the team should be okay if they can get off to a good start. There are two tough road games at Washington and BYU sandwiched around the bye week, then the team has four more road games in a six-game stretch a little further down the line—Boise State and Wyoming really stick out as potentially intimidating matchups among that group.
Pick: I’m taking the over. The bar here isn’t super-high; sure, Utah State has some roster work to do, and it’ll likely take the team a few weeks to establish a good rhythm and figure out their identity this season, but looking at the schedule, six wins is doable. Provided the Aggies can bang out three or four early wins in the first half of the year, there are another few potential victories to be had later on. It’ll be a tough season at many points, but when the dust settles I think Utah State will be in contention for another bowl appearance this year.
