The Nevada Wolf Pack have a strong chance at making a bowl game in the 2020 college football season, and could surpass last year's win total.
Nevada had a pretty mediocre football season in 2019, and the campaign ended in disappointment. The Wolf Pack went 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the Mountain West, which was good enough for an invite to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, where Nevada lost to Ohio 30-21. This year, the Wolf Pack are primed for another bowl game run, and their goal will be to come away with a win this time. Let’s take a closer look at Nevada’s current status and break down their chances at hitting seven wins in 2020.
Nevada did okay in a difficult Mountain West last season, but were a step below Hawaii and San Diego State, who finished ahead of the Wolf Pack in the West Division standings and had double-digit wins. When Nevada lost last year, they tended to lose big; the team had some ugly blowouts like 77-6 at Oregon, 54-3 versus Hawaii and 31-3 at Wyoming. Conversely, five of the Wolf Pack’s wins came by one score or less. That disparity needs some improvement this season or the Wolf Pack will go nowhere in a hurry.
First-year defensive coordinator Brian Ward will attempt to clean up that unit for 2020, while head coach Jay Norvell and offensive coordinator Matt Mumme return for their fourth seasons. The good news is that Nevada will get a lot of starters back on offense and the line should be better this year. If top targets like Elijah Cooks and Romeo Doubs can step up and contribute, the Wolf Pack will have a dangerous scoring unit this season.
Looking at the schedule, there’s some early room to get a rhythm going; the road matchup against Arkansas will be tough, but there are a few wins to be had before the one-two punch of San Diego State and a road game versus Hawaii. Later in the year are some more opportunities for victories; Utah State, Wyoming and UNLV could be the keys to getting Nevada back into a bowl game.
Pick: I feel comfortable with the over here. Nevada seems like an up-and-coming team that should be better in 2020, as they’ve got an established identity and lots of experience on the roster. There will be some tough stretches along the way, but this Wolf Pack team has every capability to hit seven wins, contend for the division title and get back to a bowl game.
