FIU Panthers: 6 Wins -- Title Odds: 500/1 Click to Get Latest Betting Odds
The FIU Panthers will try to shake off an up-and-down year and contend for a bowl game in the 2020 college football season.
FIU had a pretty disappointing football season in 2019. The Panthers finished 6-7 overall and 3-5 in Conference USA play, landing the team one spot out of the basement in the East Division. FIU did manage to make the Camellia Bowl, but fell 34-26 to Arkansas State to end the year on a sour note. In 2020, the Panthers’ goal will be to gain some ground in the C-USA standings and bring home a bowl victory this time. Let’s take a closer look at FIU’s current status and break down their chances at hitting seven wins this season.
Florida International started things out pretty rough last year at 1-3, but did manage a three-game win streak in October. The Panthers couldn’t sustain any momentum closing out the season however, going 2-4 in their final six games. It was a disappointing finish for a team that was projected to land in the No. 2 spot in the East Division.
Head coach Butch Davis is back at the helm in his fourth season for FIU, and Rich Skrosky remains as offensive coordinator. Jeff Copp and Jerod Kruse share defensive duties in their second seasons with the Panthers. The team has their work cut out for them ahead of week one, as they’ve got to replace over 70 percent of the rushing and over 45 percent of the receiving numbers from last season. FIU also has some decisions to make at the quarterback position now that James Morgan has graduated and moved on. Stone Norton and Kaylan Wiggins are intriguing options there, and we should see an interesting battle for the starter spot.
Looking at the schedule for the Panthers this season, there are definitely some potential pitfalls. FIU has to hit the road for three straight weeks early in the year, then they have three more road trips in four weeks starting in mid October. Marshall and Western Kentucky loom large in the latter part of the season as well.
Pick: This one is tough, but I’m going under. Given the turnover and offensive adjustments FIU is going to have to make in order to have a successful season, I don’t see the team jumping out to a great start. With six road games by November 7, the Panthers are going to have to find their rhythm in a hurry, and that’ll be difficult to do in a shortened restocking year. FIU seems to be on the verge of an upswing, just not this season.
