The UTEP Miners have a lot of work to do in the 2020 college football season following a one-win year.
UTEP had a pretty abysmal football season in 2019. The Miners finished at just 1-11 overall, going 0-8 in Conference USA play for a last-place finish in the West Division. This year, UTEP will look to put that limp performance behind them as the team tries to gain some ground in the C-USA standings. Let’s take a closer look at UTEP’s current status and break down their chances at hitting three wins this season.
Not a whole lot went right for UTEP in 2019, and it was their second consecutive one-win season. In the three campaigns since 2016, the Miners have won a grand total of two games. The 2019 campaign started out well enough with a 36-34 win over Houston Baptist, but after that UTEP struggled mightily and didn’t really get close in any other game outside of a 28-21 loss to Charlotte on November 9.
Dana Dimel will be back in the head coaching role for his third season at the UTEP helm. Mike Canales joins in his third year as OC and Mike Cox will once again serve as DC, also in his third year. That crew certainly has a ton of work left to do in this rebuild, and lots of guys to replace in 2020. UTEP’s losses include their top two QBs, leading rusher, five receivers, five linebackers, a couple of linemen and three good safeties. If this coaching staff is going to lead young players into a turnaround for the program, it simply has to begin this year.
Standing in UTEP’s way is a pretty stout schedule for their talent level. There are some winnable games on the slate—specifically UTSA, Charlotte and Rice, who are all projected to struggle this season. That said, all those games are on the road and the Miners have some tough matchups elsewhere like at Nevada and at Texas. Nothing is going to come easily in 2020.
Pick: This one is pretty rough, but I’m going over. Three wins is doable for this young team, provided the coaching staff can get everyone into a rhythm by the open week. There probably won’t be any winning going on at all until at least late October, but if the Miners can stay focused on the road and maybe even pull off an upset win at some point we’ll see encouraging progress for UTEP here. If better days truly are on the horizon for the Miners, we'll discover some evidence of it this season.
