Breaking Down the UTSA Roadrunners Win Total
2020 College Football Season
UTSA Roadrunners: 3 Wins -- Title Odds: 500/1 Click to Get Latest Betting Odds
The UTSA Roadrunners don't have very high expectations for the 2020 college football season under a newly-installed coaching staff.
UT San Antonio had a disappointing football campaign in 2019. The Roadrunners went 4-8 overall and 3-5 in Conference USA play for a fifth-place finish in the West Division. In 2020, UTSA will attempt to rack up a few wins and show some progress in the right direction. Let’s take a closer look at UTSA’s current status and break down their chances at hitting four wins this season.
There’s not a whole lot to like when you look at UTSA’s 2019 effort. Things started out well enough with a win over Incarnate Word but the Roadrunners struggled from there, losing three straight prior to a 3-2 conference stretch. UTSA’s bowl hopes were dashed with losses in the final three games to Southern Miss, FAU and Louisiana Tech.
The Roadrunners hit the reset button in 2020, bringing in first-year head coach Jeff Traylor. He’ll be joined by first-year coordinators Barry Lunney (offense) and Tyrone Nix (defense) who will attempt to get some better on-field performances out of their roster this season. The good news is that UTSA will bring back a lot of talent, including running back Sincere McCormick, receiver Zakhari Franklin, a trio of potential QBs and some notable names on the line. The coaching staff has a solid recruiting history so the Roadrunners should have some good young players to help fill in the gaps.
In any case, let’s look at the schedule. Things start out pretty much as brutally as possible with a road game at LSU, then another at Texas State. UTSA gets Grambling State and Memphis at home before heading out to UAB prior to the open week. After that there are some winnable games versus Old Dominion, Rice and UTEP in the latter part of the schedule. UTSA may have to pull off a relative upset to get to four wins, but the opportunities will be there.
Pick: The bar here isn’t very high, so I’m going over. Granted, UTSA is probably going to look comparatively bad in their first couple of games as the new coaching staff gets all the players ironed out, but with a little perseverance things should smooth out once the Roadrunners begin the C-USA slate. The West is going to be a competitive division again this year, however there are 4-5 potential victories against struggling teams to be had on this schedule. I think UT San Antonio shows some progress this season, and if this coaching staff can get acclimated there should be better days ahead for the Roadrunners.
