The South Alabama Jaguars are likely going to need some luck in order to become bowl-eligible in the 2020 college football season.

South Alabama is coming off a pretty disappointing football campaign in 2019. The Jaguars went just 2-10 overall last season and 1-7 in Sun Belt play for a basement finish in not only the West Division but the entire conference. This year, South Alabama will attempt to show some progress in the win column and regain some relevance in the Sun Belt standings. Check back all season long for free college football picks and college football predictions at Sports Chat Place.

Let’s take a closer look at South Alabama’s current status and break down their chances at hitting five wins this year.

There aren’t a lot of positives to take from the 2019 season when it comes to the Jaguars. There was a 37-14 win over Jackson State in the second game, a 2OT loss to Georgia Southern and a 34-30 win over Arkansas State in the team’s last appearance, but that’s about it. South Alabama simply has to perform better in Sun Belt play; something they’ve failed to do for several years now. The Jaguars also haven’t seen a bowl game since 2016.

This will be the main coaching staff’s third season with South Alabama, consisting of head coach Steve Campbell, OC Kenny Edenfield and DC Greg Stewart. It's going to be something of a “prove it” year, and the crew will have to show some meaningful progress to maintain everyone’s confidence. The good news is that South Alabama returns some young impact players, including QB Desmond Trotter, receivers Jalen Tolbert and Kawaan Baker, and TE Brandon Crum. That group will play behind a pretty experienced offensive line and should make a nice impact on the scoreboard.

Looking at the 2020 South Alabama schedule, there are plenty of potential trip-up spots. The Jaguars open with road games in two of three weeks (one at Florida), then have a couple of potentially winnable games before the bye. Things start getting interesting on Halloween, when South Alabama begins a stretch of three road games in four dates. The back end of the schedule looks intimidating indeed, so if South Alabama wants to eke out bowl eligibility (which would be quite an accomplishment, but it’s possible), they’re likely going to have to do it early.

Pick: I have to go under here, but it’s tough. Do I see five potential victories on the schedule? Yes. Do I think South Alabama will have a better season in 2020? Also yes. That said, with a lot of big-league road matchups and a competitive Sun Belt it’s going to be difficult for South Alabama to gain much ground this year. That bowl berth is coming, I just don’t think it will be this season.
