The Ball State Cardinals will likely need some luck on their side if they're going to make a bowl game in the 2020 college football season.
Ball State had a fairly difficult football campaign in 2019. The Cardinals finished 5-7 overall and 4-4 in MAC play, leaving the team third in the West Division and out of bowl contention. This season, Ball State will attempt to show some improvement on the field, fight for the division title and get to a bowl game. Let’s take a closer look at Ball State’s current status and break down their chances at hitting seven wins this season.
Ball State had some pretty rough teams on the early part of the schedule in 2019, and they ended up going 1-3 to start the season. To their credit, the Cardinals won three straight after that. To their detriment, the Cardinals then lost the next four. A few very close games slipped through Ball State’s fingers in that run, including a 35-31 loss at Western Michigan, a 45-44 loss to Central Michigan and a 41-38 loss at Kent State. That sequence knocked the Cardinals out of bowl contention, and a season-ending win against Miami-OH really didn’t matter that much.
On to 2020 then, and head coach Mike Neu enters his fifth season at the helm. Along for the ride are OC Kevin Lynch (first year) and DC Tyler Stockton (second year). That crew will field a pretty inexperienced defense, but on the other side of the ball things seem to be shaping up. QB Drew Plitt, RB Caleb Huntley and leading receiver Justin Hall are all set to be returning, and the big-play potential is certainly there. Whether or not the team can quickly gel will be a question however; the first part of Ball State’s schedule is ugly.
Speaking of the schedule, the Cardinals get back-to-back trips to Michigan and Indiana in the first three weeks, then have potentially rough matchups versus MAC rivals Western Michigan and Buffalo incoming. After Ball State’s relatively late open week, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Toledo all loom large. There certainly are some big games on this slate.
Pick: I’m going under. I feel like the number here is right on; Ball State is good enough to become bowl eligible this year, and if a few things break correctly they could hit seven or eight wins. The cause for pessimism stems from the Cardinals’ intimidating schedule; there are a lot of solid squads on there who can cause issues. I think Ball State will show some improvement on the field this year, just temper expectations in a competitive conference.
