Breaking Down the Central Michigan Chippewas Win Total
2020 College Football Season
Central Michigan Chippewas: 7 Wins -- Title Odds: 500/1
Central Michigan had a pretty solid football season going in 2019, but the last two games ended in disappointment. The Chippewas finished 8-6 overall and 6-2 in MAC play, winning the West Division but falling in the conference championship to Miami-OH 26-21. Central Michigan then lost their New Mexico Bowl berth 48-11 to San Diego State. The Chippewas will attempt to compete for the conference again in 2020, and hopefully bring home a bowl game win this time. Let’s take a closer look at Central Michigan’s current status and break down their chances at hitting eight wins this year.
After a 1-11 finish in 2018, the Chippewas were projected to finish last in the West in 2019, but mounted a pretty epic turnaround. Central Michigan started out rocky at 2-3 but rattled off wins in six of their final seven games to take first place in the West. The Chippewas let the MAC Championship game slip away by five points however, and weren’t really a factor in the bowl game. That’s going to leave a sour taste in the team’s mouth in 2020 and should serve as motivation.
Head coach Jim McElwain, OC Charlie Frye and DC Robb Akey are back with Central Michigan for their second seasons at the helm. That crew has some difficult waters to navigate with starting QB Quinten Dormandy gone, and former starting QB David Moore still suspended for a banned substance. We could see a young quarterback taking the reins here, and whoever that is will benefit from a fairly good line and some talented skill players like Kalil Pimpleton and JaCorey Sullivan. The defense should come back strong this season as well.
The non-conference schedule starts out pretty tough, with trips to Nebraska and Northwestern. There’s a stretch with four road games in five outings early, and then some potentially tough MAC games against the likes of Western Michigan and Toledo. The good news is that the West should be competitive but not overly strong this season, so Central Michigan has a great shot at another division title.
Pick: I’m going over, but just barely. This is a fairly optimistic pick, and it assumes that Central Michigan gets their quarterback situation ironed out well enough to play competently in the first half-dozen games or so. I don’t expect to see a ton of winning from the Chippewas until around mid-October, but once they get going in conference play Central Michigan should have a clear road to the title game. Eight wins is doable for this group.
