The Western Michigan Broncos are well-positioned for another solid campaign in the 2020 college football season.
Western Michigan put up a competitive football season in 2019, but things didn’t work out how the team wanted. The Broncos went 7-6 overall and 5-3 in MAC play, which earned them a trip to the First Responder Bowl. Western Michigan’s season ended in disappointment with a loss to Western Kentucky 23-20 there. This year, the Broncos will look to compete for the division title, get back to a bowl game, and earn a win this time. Let’s take a closer look at Western Michigan’s current status and break down their chances at hitting seven wins this year.
Western Michigan did a pretty admirable job in a competitive conference last season, and were second only to Central Michigan (who had an unexpected breakout campaign) in the West Division. The 17-14 loss at Northern Illinois on November 26 pretty much sealed the Broncos’ fate, as prior to that the team was on a three-game win streak with at least 35 points scored in each outing. Not to mention the fact that Western Michigan handily beat CMU head-to-head earlier in the year.
In any case, this marks head coach Tim Lester’s fourth season at the helm for Western Michigan. He’s done a pretty solid recruiting job during his tenure, and the team seems to have a nice young core as well as some outgoing upperclassmen to hold things together this season. The Broncos offensive line will be one of the most experienced groups in the conference, and with weapons like QB Kaleb Eleby and RB Sean Tyler we could see a lot of scoring from WMU.
The first part of Western Michigan’s 2020 schedule is pretty daunting. The team has trips to Cincinnati and Notre Dame, then an intimidating home matchup versus Syracuse before traveling three more times in a four-game stretch. There are some rough MAC games on the slate as well: at Central Michigan, NIU, Buffalo, at Ball State. None of those games will be easy.
Pick: I still like the over. I’m pretty high on Western Michigan this season, and that West Division is wide open. Provided the young players can step into key roles this year and contribute, the Broncos will have a nice balance of youth and experience on their roster which could pay off big in the long run. The front part of the schedule is pretty rough-looking for WMU but if the team does well in conference play the Broncos should be right in the mix at season’s end.
