The Stanford Cardinal will get back to work on making a bowl game and improving their standing in the Pac-12 during the 2020 college football season.
Stanford is coming off a disappointing football campaign in 2019. The Cardinal went 4-8 overall and 3-6 in the Pac-12, leaving the team in last place in the North Division and out of a bowl game. This season, Stanford is expected to flirt with a bowl berth, and if all goes according to plan they’ll make some noise in the conference standings as well. Let’s take a closer look at Stanford’s current status and break down their chances at making a bowl game this season.
2019 was certainly a letdown for Stanford, as they were expected to finish in third place behind Oregon and Washington in the North and get an opportunity for another bowl victory. The Cardinal had some tough matchups out of the gate however, and tumbled to a 1-3 start. Three wins in the next four games buoyed hopes for Stanford, but the team closed out with four straight losses. It was a tough schedule, and Stanford did bag a nice home win over Washington on October 5, but all in all it was a forgettable season.
This year marks the return of head coach David Shaw for his 10th season at the helm. Tavia Pritchard (third season at OC) and Lance Anderson (seventh season as DC) round out the main coaching staff. 2020 brings in a new look at starting QB in Davis Mills, and Stanford will have to cobble together an offensive line rotation to facilitate success in both the passing and running games. The Cardinal put up a paltry 105.5 rush yards per game last season, and odds are that they’ll be consciously looking to bolster that attack in 2020.
The outlook on Stanford this season is generally positive, and though there are some big dogs on the schedule there are also some winnable games. The Cardinal will have to get going early with a Week 2 trip to Arizona and a Week 4 trip to UCLA, both key road games on the opening part of the slate. After the bye, Notre Dame, Oregon and Washington are all waiting with tough road games, and the team closes out with BYU on November 28.
Pick: I have to go under. I just don’t see six wins on the schedule unless Stanford comes out of the gate strong, and with the turnover questions on both sides of the ball I don’t think things will start smoothly. The Cardinal will get some wins here and there; they won’t be an awful team. That said, with the elite competition in the second part of the schedule I don’t think Stanford will quite qualify for a bowl game this year. 5-7 seems realistic.
