The UCLA Bruins have a legitimate shot at getting back to a bowl game in their 2020 college football campaign.
UCLA is coming off a pretty meager football season in 2019. The Bruins finished 4-8 overall and 4-5 in Pac-12 play, leaving the team tied for third in the South Division and out of a bowl berth. This year, UCLA will look to make some more progress in the conference standings and make their way to a bowl game if all goes well. Let’s take a closer look at UCLA’s current status and break down their chances at hitting six wins this season.
There aren’t a ton of positives to take away from UCLA’s 2019 season, but a couple are there. The Bruins were able to pull off a few nice wins, including at Washington State and versus Arizona State. That said, UCLA was only realistically competitive in a few of their losses, and opened up the season at 1-5. Three straight wins followed, but the Bruins closed things out with three straight losses and didn’t even sniff a bowl game.
Chip Kelly is back at head coach for UCLA in his third season in 2020. He’ll be joined by OC Justin Frye (second year) and DC Jerry Azzinaro (third year). That crew has some decisions to make on the roster, as Joshua Kelley has moved on and the team will need some more output from the running back position. Demetric Felton (who is technically a wide receiver) could offer some creative output from the backfield, so he’ll be interesting to watch in particular this season. Outside of that, the UCLA defense will be a point of focus as well; the team is talented there but really doesn’t have that much depth.
UCLA’s schedule this season is interesting. There are some Mountain West teams on there who will fall somewhere between decent and tricky good, and those will be telling matchups for the Bruins to navigate. There’s also quite a bit of talent in the Pac-12 this year (again), and teams like Utah and USC should be formidable opponents. Nothing will come easily for UCLA in 2020 but the team has the talent to make it through this slate.
Pick: I like the over. Provided Kelly’s squad can (finally) get off to a good start and hammer out a few wins before conference play gets going, UCLA certainly has a path to six-plus victories in 2020. I don’t think the Bruins are at the point where they’ll be able to contend for the division right now, but they’re certainly good enough to make a bowl game.
