Kentucky Wildcats (0-0) at Florida Gators (0-0)

College Football: Saturday, September 12, 2020 (Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium)

The Line: Florida Gators -12.5

The Kentucky Wildcats and the Florida Gators meet Saturday, September 12 in college football action from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Florida is coming off a pretty darn good campaign in 2019 with an 11-2 overall record. The Gators finished second in the SEC’s East Division but managed a 36-28 win over Virginia in the Orange Bowl. As for Kentucky, they went 8-5 overall and finished off the season with a 37-30 win over Virginia Tech in the Belk Bowl. This should be a great early-year matchup between two talented SEC schools. Let’s take a closer look at both teams and see if we can get an idea of how things might play out when the Wildcats meet the Gators on September 12.

Kentucky did well in 2019 all things considered, but did leave a win or two on the field—namely a close 29-21 loss versus Florida and a 17-13 loss at home to Tennessee. The SEC was pretty rough as usual last year however, so the 3-5 Wildcats mark is at least understandable. The good news is that Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops enters this year with an experienced crew, and the team seems pretty set at the key positions. The Wildcats may have to get a little creative while QB Terry Wilson gets back in the swing of things, and they’ll have to rethink their offensive philosophy. Lynn Bowden stepped in admirably for the injured Wilson last season and churned out 1,468 rushing yards to buoy the offense, so we’ll be seeing a different look in 2020.

Over on the Florida side, they’re riding pretty high after last year’s solid campaign, but the sting of coming in second to Georgia in the division standings—and falling at home 24-17 to them as well—likely still hurts. The Gators roll into 2020 on a nice run, though; the team ended last season with four straight wins, all by double-digits. Head coach Dan Mullen returns to the sideline for his third year in 2020. It’s looking like his crew will have a promising roster to work with, and we should see a continued emergence for QB Emory Jones, who will soon be the team’s starter. Guys like Dameon Pierce and Malik Davis will try to step in and replace solid RB numbers from the departed Lamical Perine as well.

Pick: I like Kentucky a little better. This should be a pretty great matchup, and I expect Florida to win ultimately, but the Wildcats are good enough to stick in there. Sure, the road is going to be bumpy, and we’ll see some bad errors over these first few games, but Kentucky has enough talent to be competitive with (most of) the SEC this season and I think it’ll start here. If the line on this one shrinks into single-digits I’ll probably revisit it, but for now I think the Wildcats can crack the spread.

Andrew’s Pick Kentucky Wildcats +12.5
