Breaking Down the UCF Knights Win Total
2020 College Football Season
UCF Knights: 10 Wins -- Title Odds: 100/1
The UCF Knights are projected to bang out double-digit victories once again during this college football season.
Central Florida had a solid football campaign in 2019, going 10-3 overall and 6-2 in the American Athletic Conference. Though finishing second in the East Division to Cincinnati, the Knights earned an invite to the Gasparilla Bowl where they took out Marshall 48-25. UCF is projected for another strong result in 2020, and they’ll be looking to bag both division and conference titles this year. Let’s take a closer look at Central Florida’s current status and break down their chances at hitting 11 wins this season.
If there’s an overlapping pang of regret to the Knights’ season in 2019, it’s finishing behind Cincinnati in the East and missing out on the conference championship. UCF was predicted to win that division—though not by much—and a 27-24 loss to the Bearcats on October 4 really stung down the stretch. Outside of that, UCF was a couple of plays away from a perfect season, as their other losses (35-34 at Pitt and 34-31 at Tulsa) were incredibly tight as well. In the win column, only one of their victories (34-31 at Tulane) was anywhere close on the scoreboard, so in short it was a powerful Knights team that just couldn't close on a few occasions.
Moving on to 2020, UCF head coach Josh Heupel enters his third season, joined by third-year DC Randy Shannon and first year OC tandem Alex Golesh and Anthony Tucker. That crew will get some significant roster talent back this season in names like RB Otis Anderson, QB Dillon Gabriel, WR Marlon Williams and DE Tre’Mon Morris-Brash. There’s some turnover happening of course, namely receiver Gabriel Davis and a pair of all-conference offensive linemen among others, but realistically UCF restocks very well in 2020 and will field a strong team once again.
Looking at the schedule, if everything falls into place and the Knights play steady and to their capabilities the whole season, there’s a potential to run the table and go 12-0. There are two ACC teams in the first three games (North Carolina and Georgia Tech) who could pose some early issues, but the Knights are more than capable of handling those outings if they come out of the gate strong. Teams like Memphis, Temple and Cincinnati loom large after the break, but the road is there, and most importantly it's doable.
Pick: I like the over. I’m pretty high on UCF this season, as they’re not losing a whole lot of talent from that dominant squad from a year ago. The Knights will get into a few close games along the way, and they simply HAVE to figure out ways to come away with wins in those situations. Tight matchups have been an Achilles heel for the Knights over the past couple of seasons, but I like things to work out well in 2020 with a division (and possibly conference) championship and another bowl win. Should be a fun year.
