The Nebraska Cornhuskers look to return to glory in the 2020 college football season.
Nebraska had a football campaign in 2019 that was mediocre at best. The Cornhuskers finished 5-7 overall and 3-6 in Big Ten play, landing one spot out of the basement in the West Division and ineligible for a bowl game once again. This year, Nebraska’s main goals will be to climb the conference standings and get back to postseason play. Let’s take a closer look at Nebraska’s current status and break down their chances at hitting seven victories this season.
Nebraska started off well enough last season, going 4-2 through six games with an OT loss at Colorado and a 48-7 loss to Ohio State as their only blemishes. Things went downhill after that as the Big Ten schedule really got into gear, and the Cornhuskers would only win one game (Maryland) the rest of the way. The 2-6 run to finish off the season was certainly disappointing, but Nebraska could have had a couple more wins along the way; three of their final four losses came by seven points or fewer. In any case, it was a forgettable year.
Nebraska head coach Scott Frost hits the sideline for his third season, and he gets a new offensive coordinator in Matt Lubick. The team will move toward a more streamlined and effective offense, but they’ve got some personnel decisions to make. Quarterback is one spot that will need some attention; Adrian Martinez, Luke McCaffrey and a couple other guys could potentially slot in there. Receivers like Wan’Dale Robinson, Demariyon Houston and Jamie Nance will have to step up and produce this year as well if the Cornhuskers are going to make a bowl.
Speaking of a bowl, on paper there’s a pretty clear-cut path for Nebraska to become bowl-eligible and beyond in 2020. The schedule is pretty manageable at first; teams like Purdue and Cincinnati will be tricky but the Cornhuskers don’t really face anyone of consequence until Ohio State on Halloween. That kicks off a five-game gauntlet of rough outings, but if all goes well for Nebraska they could have six or seven wins by that time.
Pick: I like the over a little better. Assuming Nebraska can get their lineup set in a comfortable, effective way, the team shouldn’t have too many issues over the first half of the schedule. There’s a pretty intimidating stretch with four home games in five dates, but if the Cornhuskers can take one or two of those late-season games, they’ll be in good position for a mid-level bowl, which should be considered a great success.
